Michael Moore Rips Wolf Blitzer on CNN

I didn't think it was possible, but Moore comes off as even more miserable and bitter than he does in his movies. He constantly tries to change the topic away from his own movie to the war, and goes so far as to blame CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta for the situation in Iraq. The odd thing is, aside from this clip, everything I've seen on CNN and other media outlets about "Sicko" has been outright sycophantic in its acceptance of Moore's claims. Once, just once, does CNN criticize those claims, and Moore goes on a tirade, personally attacking a physician who questions Moore's opinions on health care in the U.S. Typical -- the big critic cannot stand to be criticized. He's pretty thin skinned for a guy who has made a profession of attacking others.

So I guess his next step will be running for office!
I'm a physician who's appalled at the state of our health care system. It is clear to most health care providers that our system is a complete mess. Although Moore sometimes goes overboard and could have been more diplomatic with Wolff, his criticisms are quite valid and his statements that big Pharma and the Medical insurance industry have been able to fight back reform are quite accurate. The free market system is a good way to produce cars, but not healthcare. The profit motive poisons health care decisions and creates for profit companies that seek to maximize profit, not health. Although Gupta's piece wasn't that negative, he ended with the emphasis on Moore 'fudging the facts,' making it seem like a biased piece.

Why is it so upsetting that Moore is pointing out all these problems and counteracting decades of propaganda from the HMOs/insurance companies and big Pharma? It is definitely true that Canadians are pleased and proud of their health care system and Americans are not. Why do we think every other developed nation has it wrong and we've got it right?

I think any message given by Michael Moore; whether good, bad or indifferent is lost in his disrespectul manner of speaking and poor grooming.

In person, next door he might be a real nice guy but when viewed in this type situation he looks like a Goober and sounds like a ill-mannered jerk.

It's hard to concentrate on anything he says when you are visualizing him parking his car in the front yard and anyone near him would know he needs a shower; (also a shave and haircut) and help with poorly directed anger.

I almost feel sorry for him, he looks to me to be an emotional trainwreck.

He's probably laughing all the way to the bank. YMMV and all that 'stuff'.

A lot of folks get their 15 minutes of fame in this world. I believe that Michael Moore has had a half hour. Time to stop the clock.

  or at least send him some soap; for his shave, shower and mouth.

I just took notice we have the same last name..if he's some type of distant relative, I'm going to put myself up for adoption.

Sue, you are welcome here anytime. With or without your soaps!

What I found to be the worst part was at the beginning when the CNN doctor reviewed the facts. He talked about taking the 9/11 firefighters Moore took to Cuba, and then essentially accused Moore of being a hypocrite for taking them to a worse health care system. Cuba (GDP: $40,000,000,000.00) being ranked 39, America (GDP: $13,210,000,000,000.0) 37. (Source: Nationmaster) Did CNN completely miss the point? Cuba is under economic sanctions, and the U.S. is a superpower.. Yet they are only separated by 2 spots in the WHO rankings. But, CNN completely skips that comparison.

It's obviously a major problem that the poor in America get no health care, but to change that would take a minor miracle. With the economic and lobbying clout of the AMA and the pharmaceutical giants it will never happen. And therein lies the rub in my mind. Love the system or hate the system, because it creates so much profit it allows doctors to research, to conduct experiments, and is a big reason why the U.S. is the world leader in medical research. It frees up more money for the government to offer grant

Something that no one else has talked about as of yet is the cut-in by Lou Dobbs near the end saying, "Moore is more of a left-wing promoter than Hugo Chavez." How ridiculous. At least Wolf had the good sense to leave that remark alone.

I don't think Moore's movie or his opinions are all that upsetting -- it's his attitude in the CNN piece linked in the original post. Rather than dispute Gupta's criticism, he just stooped to personal attacks against Gupta and Blitzer. He can dish it out, but he can't take it -- and, consequently, he does his own cause a disservice.

Interesting. I've some Canadian friends who mention their older relatives coming to the US for treatment due to some backlogs. I guess the healthcare system works best when everyone's healthy.

Of course, there is a drought of GPs in the US, plenty of specialists that drive the cost up, some of which is attributed to high malpractice insurance costs -- partly due to lawyers, partly due to the medical industry not able to police themselves better.

Howdy Folks,

This Barbershop forum has turned into quite the snake pit lately... While the people here are much better suited to discussing conflicting opinions than most internet forums, the last few weeks have strained even the more veteran voices here.

Does anyone have an opinion on why there have recently been so many negative posts about America and the way that our society and/or government is running? I guess it makes for good "news" to bash the President, bash our health care system and sing the praises of various noteworthy/notorious celebrities who have nothing better to do than cause divisiveness and bitterness with their rants and complaints.

The members of B&B have usually shown an above average ability to discuss their divergent views without denigrating into the practice of simply repeating the diatribes of others.

I'm not a moderator and thus speak without any authority here, but I'd like to see our crew get back to honest discussion of our own topics of interest. We can leave the task of repeating the latest wrong-of-the-day to the "journalists".
