My Return to Shaving

As many of you know I was in a car accident recently that ripped up my face pretty good and since I've been totally unable to shave. But now my wounds are starting heal and I'm counting the days until my return to shaving. Right now I'm sporting a full beard, nothing I can do about it. But soon......

So I'm looking for recommendations on what to use for what will be first shave in a good while. Mo has generously offered me some Penhaligons cream which I most definately will be using, now I've got to fill in the rest. Any thoughts?

I was not aware of your accident but I'm glad you are doing better!

I'd strongly suggest utilizing a dose of Speick A/S along with one of Mama Bear's summer aftershave balms. =)

I agree - it's got to be a first class shave all the way... I nice hot towel treatment to soften the beard, some awesome Penhaligon's shave cream lathered up with your favorite brush (B&B or otherwise), a nice splash afterwards like Speick or similar, and follow it up with Mama Bear's Summer ASB. Match the Penhaligon's cologne to the cream and you've got a shave to look forward to!

Get a nice hair tonic and apply that as part of your post-shave process. I've had some mornings that were less than stellar turn out to be overall good because I could smell the Pinaud Eau du Portugal in my hair.

What you do in the shower can also be part of the return to shaving celebration. A bar of South of France Rosemary Mint along with some Mama Bear Rosemary Mint shampoo would be a (YMMV) great way to kick things off.

And I second the hot towel with lather treatment suggestion.

Trim the beard with an wahl type first. Mama Bear Aftershave and or Pre de Provance aftershave - very gentle.

For a real first class shave, I'll go out on a limb, and second the using of Penhallingtons. If Mo has it, its got to be good.

My suggestion: the QED Wild Rose that you so brilliantly procured for the rest of us. Truly an out of body experience.

I didn't shave for a week while on vacation. A slant bar with a Swede did the trick nicely.

I'd still avoid the alcohol based splashes for a bit, if I were you.

I'm glad your doing better. I would recommend that after every shave you use some kind of moisturizer with Shea Butter.

I was on a Road trip from LA to the midwest with one of my best friends. We were in the middle of the Arizona desert on an Indian reservation in the middle of nowhere when he lost control of the vehicle and rolled the SUV we were in a few times. We both had our seats belts on and if it were not for that I can't imagine what would have happened. But thankfully, we both walked away with only a lot of scratches and bruises. I'm still pretty sore, but I'm doing well. Now I'm just looking forward to a healed face so I can shave again.

Glad to hear you are on you way to recovery and will be back in the saddle again soon, so to speak.

I have shaved off three beards in my life time. The first two times I cut the hair as close as I could to my skin with some scissors and then shaved off the stubble. Results: could have been better, mainly because I did a poor job of trimming the beard to a stubble.

The third time I went to an old time barber, sadly no longer in business, and he did it up just right: trimmed it down to a stubble, wrapped a hot towel around my face and then shaved off the rest with a straight razor. (Ok, he used foam from a hot foam dispenser, but I don't what to get picky here.)
He followed that up with some Clubman Pinoud AS and I felt great.

My recommendation is to have a barber at least trim the beard to a close stubble. After that, make it grand time and include some fine single malt.
