    Default Gun Holster Question

    I saw this online.
The idea of having a loaded gun pointing towards my boys doesn't sound all that appealing, or safe. Has anybody used this holster?

secondly, what is the likelihood of a gun going off on its own while being holstered if its not being touched?

The chances of a gun firing without the trigger being pulled is pretty much nil. However, as much as I trust my Glock, I don't think I would ever be comfortable with the business end of a .40 pointed at my frank and beans. Ever.

A quality firearm in a holster is not going to fire. I have not used one, but bellybands have been around for a long time so I wouldn't think there are people shooting themselves with them.

If you feel uncomfortable about it, you can always carry on an empty chamber, especially if you're carrying a handgun without an external safety, like a Glock or PPS. If you go this route, just practice drawing and chambering out of the holster. There's a much higher risk in having it go off if you're in a stressful situation when you're drawing rather than it going off without being touched.

Every now and then you hear of one going off while being put into the holster and it manages to catch on a strap or something.

The only time they "just go off" is on the evening news when they describe characters playing w/ a gun and one of them manages to pull the trigger, firing it.
They always report the gun "just went off", as if on it's own.

It's about as likely as your car just starting up on it's own.

Modern firearms in good mechanical condition don't just go off on their own. They go off when someone or something pulls the trigger. Any holster should fully cover the trigger guard so that nothing can accidentally pull the trigger.

Belly bands have been around for a long time. They conceal well, but are generally slow to draw. Opinions differs in terms of comfort. But they are one of the only ways for most guys to to carry really big guns (think big magnum pistols and the like) without printing.

For a similar idea also check out the smart carry holster.

A modern firearm in good condition will not fire unless something pulls the trigger. A modern holster in good condition will cover the trigger to prevent such.

So, under those conditions, a gun in a holster is considered to be rendered safe.

Every now and then, and it gets repeated way more than it actually happens, some dummy will shove a firearm into a holster with such reckless abandon and force that something gets into the triggerguard and pulls the trigger. That is a jackass problem not a problem with the firearm or holster.

Great advice so far. I'd only add that the little gun you have is better than the big gun you left at home when you need it. Concealed carry (when you have the option to choose your own gear) is a balancing act between a lot of factors. While the psychological disadvantages of having a modern pistol in working order secured in such a fashion that it's pointed at the twigs and berries is one factor, from a logical risk assessment standpoint it's a small one.

Well, you know what I mean.

A few years ago Plaxico Burress (a football player) shot himself in the leg at a night club. I don't remember the details but I think it was an accidental discharge as it was stuffed in his pants.

The belly band is a good quality concealment device, and when used correctly is almost undetectable. If you look closely the business end of the weapon is not pointed at your boys, but down your leg.

If you have experience with firearms, and use and wear them keeping safety in mind, they will not be going off "by accident". Inexperienced users fooling around or showing off are usually to blame for "the thing just went off".

Our of curiosity, how do you go to the bathroom (#1) with the gun right in front of your boys? You gotta go sit down?
