Genuine Ogallala Bay Rum Shaving Soaps

Has anyone else tried these soaps from E-bay, I looked through the threads but found nothing in there. I ordered some in the traditional Bay Rum Scent and was very plaesed with the results, fragrance, and the customer service from this company... was wondering if anyone else had any input?????

Well, some Indians ride bay horses, and some like to drink rum. Pretty obvious if you think about it.

If you look at the sellers info, it's obvious that it's "Ogallala bay rum" products b/c the seller's located in Ogallala Nebraska.

I've tried this soap, and there are some reviews on it. The verdict for most is that the scents are fantastic, but the lathers leave something to be desired. Very airy, not dense, etc.

I agree w/this on all counts, however, while the lather is probably the worst I've come across (airy, thin, sometimes disappears and has to be reapplied until you get the hang of it), it's also some of the slickest soap I've found. Almost to the point where once you get a good layer on, you don't have to reapply between passes. Excellent for blade buffing or for the guy who tends to shave the same spot w/out reapplying lather. And the scents are quite good, I've tried all three.

I've had quite a bit of commentary w/the owner regarding his products, and I've been told that they might be reformulating their soap. Don't know if this will ever happen or not.

btw, if you do decide to try this stuff, don't try to melt it. I about ruined a sample he provided me trying to do so. I don't think they're triple milled soaps, but they're obviously not glycerin either.

No problem Tim. I'm originally from Nebraska, so I'm always on the lookout for NE based vendors, it was the only reason I noticed it.

I tried a combo of KMF unscented and this bay rum soap this morning. While I showered, I soaked my brush in a bowl and added water to my soap container so it was just slightly above the soap puck. Then I poured the water off of the soap, shook out almost all of the water from the brush, and then charged the brush up really good. Then I moved over to a bowl where I added 2 pumps of KMF unscented and more water a few drops at a time.

All in all, it was an excellent shave. After the second pass I did have to add another pump of KMF b/c the lather was still disappearing a bit once I put it on my face. But outside of that I got a great shave. Much denser lather than with just the soap, but still had the great scent and excellent slickness.The only thing I would've changed would be to ONLY add a few drops of water to the top of the puck while I showered, instead of covering the entire puck w/water. The water I poured off the puck was brown like the soap, probably wasted a bit.

I also have some bay rum w/lime cream from SCS and some bay rum cream from Olivia that I might try w/the Ogallala soap in the future. But honestly, the scent of this soap is THE best part, and I didn't want to muddy up the scent by adding another bay rum product.

I have several bay rum products, this soap (combined w/KMF to help w/its performance) and HBS bay rum soap are my favorites. The scents and performance are very different, but they both smell great in their own way. I can't put my finger on what's in the ogallala stuff that makes it smell so good, but it's definitely on the sweeter smelling side than the HBS.

Great idea Glen, I think you brought this soap back from the dead for me. thanks! Yes the idea of superlather's been done before, but I don't think anyone's tried it w/this specific soap. I know only a few people have actually tried this soap and were quickly disappointed b/c of it's poor lather. Hopefully this will help out those of us that have already bought it.

I also have some ems place unscented liquid shaving cream. I'll try a combo of Ems and this soap as well and report back.

So I thought about the "slickness" of the soap and realized that yep that was true. So then I thought about maybe trying an experiment with this stuff, here's were it gets dangerous..... Thinking back I realized that the spousal unit had bought me some actual shave creme awhile back, that I had tried with my disposables, trying to ease the pain on my cheeks.... (Gotta love a woman that thinks of you while she is at the beauty shope hehehe)
So I took the Aveda shave creme and added some to the Ogallala shave soap and. WOW lather happened!!!!!! So now I have the slickness of the soap and the nice thick lather of the creme...... Then armed with this great, genius, "original",,,, idea I head back to this site to let everyone know what I had discoverd.... I soon realize that that I am not so smart and that this even has a name SUPERLATHER / UBERLATHER...... oh well still a newbie here LOL but at least I'm having fun again shaving .......

Superlather's been done before, but it never crossed my mind to use it to try and "fix" some of the shortcomings of this particular soap.

I've done the same in the past w/other soaps/creams, using KMF unscented shaving cream. I'll mix some KMF w/this soap this week and report back later.

Hey Glen,

First, welcome to B&B!!

When reading the description of super slick, but not much lather, I had the same thought, "This calls for, 'Super Lather'!!" And being a big fan of both Bay Rum and Super Lather, I might have to try this. It will probably go good with SCS's Bay Rum creme!

Hi Glen,
Don't be the least bit embarrassed.. The lads come up with new names for things that have been around for years. Had dabbed Palmolive Shave Cream onto the Williams soap back in the early sixties.. Did not think to come up with a name for it other than, hmmm this is a bit better.

I have found that lathering first with just the soap then building a superlather and re-lathering before shaving has now produced the best results!!!! Leaves my face feeling very smooth and slick..... I must say I am having more fun than I ever thought possible shaving !!!!!!!

If no ones heard, Ogallala has recently reformulated their soaps.

Their new soap line has;

two new scents - Bay Rum&Sandalwood, Bay Rum&Lemongrass

now include shea butter

are meltable

work very well compared to the old soaps. I ordered one of each recently and just had my first shave w/one this morning. A huge difference in lather quality has occurred w/minimal loss of the great slickness of the old soaps. And of course, the excellent bay rum scents haven't changed.
