so you wasted $6 on ONE aftershave you didn't like, and now you're saying all aftershaves are bad?

I am not a big fan of Clubman as well, but can't do without my Proraso AS.

For me the appeal of an after shave is that it smells nice and leaves your face feeling smooth and clean and any actual benefits to your skin such as reducing razor burn, killing bacteria, closing your pores....etc is a bonus. Im not really sure Clubman is the best aftershave to try first since its a very strong scent, you may want to try something lighter. If you have a Whole Foods near bye you can try Thayers Witch hazel or Aubrey Organics Mens Stock after shaves which both come in a variety of scents that are very light and mild and cost around $10.

During my first year of wet shaving I used C.O. Bigelow Barber Aftershave Balm. After reading about Nivea Extra Sensitive Balm and Real Shaving Company Balm, I used those as well. When I ran into ingrown problems along with a flair up of adult acne, I started doing a good rinse after shaving followed by witchhazel scrub on a cotton pad before moisturizing balm.

On a lark, I picked up some Clubman at a big, box pharmacy that sounds like CVS. At first I thought it was way to strong, but got the nostalgic barber shop rush most of the day. Since then I've added Pinaud Bay Rum, Aqua Velva Musk and Mennen skin bracer - all the old drugstore goodies.

Today I use balm almost always in the winter and occasionally in the summer. The aromatic aftershave splashes are pretty much for my own benefit and those lucky enough to get close enough to enjoy them.

Aftershave is just a great way to finish a shave... smells good, feels good.

I don't understand the appeal of aftershaves means "explain what is the allure of aftershaves". I don't like all aftershaves means "I don't like all aftershaves".

I never interpreted "understand" to mean anything other than "to perceive the meaning of something". Here's a good link if you get confused on the meaning of words in the future http://www.merriam-webster.com/

    Hope that helps.

I use aftershave for the moisture benefit. I really like the scent of the TOBS sandalwood shave soap, but after the shave the scent goes away. Therefore, I use TOBS sandalwood aftershave gel for the smell to linger on. It lasts about 1-2 hours after applying.

Sounds like you need to try the VEG. I bet you will be a chosen one.

Clubman is not the best choice to base your decision on. It's cheap for sure but you get what you pay for. If you really want to try a fantastic aftershave - and I never liked aftershave either until I tried it - try Vitos:

I bought it because I've seen it mentioned so often not only here but every shave related website, Amazon, etc. So I though there must be something to it....been around 150 years or more.

I've had a few balms that I've used in the past namely Hugo, Zirh and Nivea. Each of those was very understated for lack of a better description and tolerable. The Pinaud was just overpowering and offensive to my nose in fact I had to wash my face twice (and I'm still retching from the smell, it doesn't want to go away), needless to say I've thrown it away and will chalk up the six dollar loss to a lesson well learned which is I don't think I'm an aftershave kinda guy. Perhaps I will try some Witch Hazel if I feel the need for a post shave "refresher".

I personally don't understand why you would use such a strong masking scent if you like your soap/cream scent or put another way why would you buy different scent soaps only to cover it up in the end with an aftershave?

I personally like the smell of my soaps to linger with me throughout the day. I feel like a quality soap/creme is nourishing enough for my skin. Am I the only one here?

*edit* yes I probably am the only one here seeing how this is the aftershave forum

Oily skin and alum user here as well. However, I feel that AS splashes with decent alcohol content actually helps control oiliness. Give one a try, you might be surprised.

As for Clubman products, well ... I'm not a fan either.
I'm looking for some with alcohol but without much scent as I also like my fragrances. Can you or anyone else recommend some to try? Thumbs down to Clubman here, too.

Very different meanings. I too was recently the recipient of assumption, conjecture, misinterpretation, etc. here at B&B and it's frustrating. Funny how most misunderstandings tend toward the negative.

I really like my Lucky Tiger Aspen as. It smells like I just came out of a barbershop, but not my grandfather's barber shop. It's pretty classic but since it's alcohol based it can be harsh on application.

I use aftershave for its healing properties. For smell I use an edt or cologne. Trumpers sandalwood is nice. Try a different AS or don't. I don't really care.

Oh my! One of my very favorite parts of the shave! Proraso splash, Alt Innsbruck, Speick, DR Harris Marlborough..... many others along these lines will help in your understanding.

Don't give up on aftershave based on your bad experience with Clubman. There are tons of great AS products out there that might agree with you better.
If you do look to try another, I would suggest one that doesn't have a lingering scent, like Proraso or D.R. Harris Arlington.

I guess it's about personal preference. I like Clubman on certain days, others its Aqua Velva, then Old Spice and even Brut 33 when I feel a surge of testosterone. It all depends on the day I guess.

I do not depend on my soap to be my scent of the day, the only soaps I have that may seem to "linger" is AOS Sandalwood.

And when using Tom Ford Oud Wood Cologne behind AOS its heavenly all day, but I don't think its because of the AOS soap.

That's why I use Nivea or unscented balms, to let the Cologne of the day do its work!
