    Default What's your five?

I haven't been shaving with these vintage or vintage type razors as long as a lot of you. Already I've found a few that just seem superior to others in their class. I have shaved with all the common razors mentioned here on a regular basis and I still have a few to add with my RAD as they come along. The ones I haven't tried yet are on the rare or exotic side. Although so far it seems these five I'm listing in no particular order are going to be hard to beat. These will be the five that will never be sold at this point and I feel that this may never change regardless of where RAD takes me.

Disclaimer: as we all know MMMV so I reserve the right to edit this list.

    1)Gillette Old Type
    2)Schick 66
    3)Micromatic Clog Pruf
    4)Gem 1912
    5)Merkur 37C

    1. Rocket HD
    2. Toggle
    3. Aristocrat (ugly and smooth)
    4. Stahley head on custom handle
    5. Old Type head on custom handle

I haven't used my Toggle but 5 ~ 6 times and I plan on keeping it forever.

I get great shaves from the HD Rocket. Great weight and balance with my 'goldilocks' aggressiveness.
Same thing for the old Aristocrat. Shaves great and solid as a rock.

Stahely head 'floats' and shaves like a dream.

Old Type is like driving a sports car.
    Shave yourself.

As it happens I like to keep my rotation down to 5, so those tend to be my five favorite razors. My current rotation consists of:

    1. #15 Aristocrat
    2. BRW Bull Mastiff with NEW head (really any NEW or New Improved, but I really like Bob's handles)
    3. Edwin Jagger DE89
    4. Red Tip Super-Speed
    5. Slant

Honorable mention goes to Gillette adjustables, I really like them, but I try to keep my rotation down to 5, and the Fatboys and Slims keep getting bumped.

I've had about 30 razors through my paws over the last year, but I have consolidated to 3 razors. I have another old type coming my way with a Bull Mastiff handle, but these are all I need.

    • Gillette Old Type - Bob Razor Works Improved Handle
    • Merkur Futur
    • Feather Portable - my travel razor

I can only list three as I've only found 3 I love.

    Long Comb New
    Short comb New
    Slim

I'll not part with my Tech, but it's not used much.

If we are just talking about shaving:

    Feather AS-D1
    ‘46 Milord
    ‘47 Super Speed
    195 Bottom Dial

I’m still looking for number 5.…..

These lists are always fun, partly b/c my list is always changing. Right now...

Hoffritz slant 3-piece head on Bull Mastiff XL handle ... The handle is a little long for me
Gillette New Deluxe ... I have fallen in love with this one
Gillette Goodwill ... I was amazed at how close this shaved. Matched my slants!
Personna ... I have one with the squared head and aluminum handle (don't like the handle); Great shaver though.
Ever Ready Streamline ... Shaves great; love the weight
Looking for #15 or #20 Aristocrat...

1930's era Gillette "New" long comb is the best vintage razor I have ever used. Many do not include this classic in their "top five" simply because they have not had the pleasure.

I have two New long combs and two New Deluxe razors and they shave good but I just don't have a fond attachment.

Hmm... Only 5... OK. Would probably be these, then:

    1. Long-comb NEW
    2. Senator
    3. Flare-tip Rocket
    4. New Improved
    5. V-1 Super Adjustable (for sentiment)

When I travel, though, it's usually my Fatboy that goes with me, oddly enough.

    All vintage Gillette. . .

    1. Old Type
    2. Made-in-England NEW
    3. Any other long comb NEW
    4. Red Tip
    5. Slim

Perhaps it's me, but the England-made NEW seems to shave just a little more aggressively than the US variant.

Note: I've not tried an ABC or New Improved - I also feel an SE in my near future, particularly a Gem 1912 and an Ever-Ready Lather Catcher. . .

Pretentious as it may sound, I have zero interest in current production razors. I don't know why this is.
