Guess that mysterious item

OK, here it goes. Size is about 1" in every dimension...

I know what this is but I have no pic to post, so I'll stay on the sideline unless no one else gets this. HINT: you'd find this in a kitchen of about 50 years ago.
 
I'll jump on it. It's an adjustable jar opener that can take stubborn lids off your smallest caper jar to a gallon pickle jar.

It looks like some type of padded finger or thumb protection, used when applying a tool with pressure. Maybe flint knapping or carving.
 
legion has it! It is called a thumbstall and was used to block air passage through a cannon's vent while reloading. This helped prevent premature combustion of the charge.
