    Default Edwin Jagger DE89L...wow

Not for me. I bought an EJ DE89L several weeks ago and never used it. I got it on the recommendation of fellow B&Bers. A friend who got a really cheapo set recently was thinking about a new razor and brush. I gave him my Vulfix 2235 to replace his shedder. He loves it; best shaves he's gotten to that point.

Last week I gave him the DE89L on approval; if he liked it he could have it for what I paid.

His reaction on first shave was

    WOW

Best, closest shave ever. He's one of those guys who gets a 5:00 shadow at 10:15 if he shaves at 10:14. He still shows some shadow, but it's way less than ever before. Once he gets down to going in some different directions on his beard, I'm thinking it will be gone completely.

    Thanks for the recommendations, guys.

good for you for helping your friend out...... If he hadn't taken it, I would have gladly snagged it up if you posted it here @ B&B.

I purchased one also, and used it once. Loved it! A co-worker was looking at getting into DE shaving, so I offered to let him try the "JAG". That was the last time I saw it...... He did pay me what I paid for it though!

    Congrats,
    Tim

Nice. I have been thinking about converting a buddy of mine. My plan was to buy an R89 for myself and give him the DE89L... but I don't want to give it up just yet...

I am one of the one's who can't use mine.

    I get bitten every time.

The darn thing is just too smooth and fast for me. I appreciate the finish, but I'm not getting enough feedback from mine and the chrome is too slick for me to control.

I go from WOW to OWW!!

Shame since they are such beautiful razors and good shavers. I gave up on mine.. BST here I come!!

I absolutely love my de89. I've got a few other razors I want to try but it seems everytime I reach into the shave cabinet my hand comes out with the de89 between my fingers.

I also gave mine away to a co-worker earlier in the year. I missed it so much I just bought one of the new barley chrome models.

What blade did your friend use with the de89l?

Does the Barley Chrome version shave any differently? Any other differences?

The DE89L is my go to razor. Most of the time I use a Shark SC with it.
What a great smooth shave it provides. I don't have any problem with the grip,
the lined handle gives plenty of control.

I got the one with the Barley Chrome handle. Same head, but nice tactile feel to the handle. Good option for those that think the "normal" handle is too slick.

Can you tell us what the barley chrome is like? Handle more grippy? Shaves any different to the 89L?

    Thanks

The EJ DE89 L was a recent purchase. I loaded it with a feather and found it to be a too aggressive combination for me—just a few weepers but my skin felt like it was filleted! Then I loaded it with a Merkur and it’s my new go to over my Futur…for the time being.

Have you tried Personna RP or Astra SP? Way better than Merkurs blades. I didn't get along with Feathers either.

Quoted from another thread due to relevance and GREAT photography skills. I have the 89L and the Muhle R89 with the same head but textured handle. I don't see an added advantage with the R89 and as a logical extension the barley chrome. Others disagree and say it is indeed an advantage. I'd make the decision based on looks if I had it to do all over again (and I think the Barley chrome is much nicer). Either way, I've found it good practice for me to keep my alum block nearby. I wipe my finger tips on it and I've got a nice grip on ANY razor (I'm just learning straights and a firm grip is key for me). Honestly, I may get the barley chrome and PIF my 89L to a family member just because I'm a nice (addicted) guy who just so happens to like the updated look better.

The handle is a bit heavier (47 grams) than the DE89L (44 grams). The knurling is very fine, to me it feels like a
fatter ball end Old Type. Overall the razor is nicely balanced and feels great in the hand. I will give it a go tomorrow.

Weight comparison from left: Mühle R89/R41 handle, EJDEA89L handle, DE89BA11 handle, DE89BA11 complete.
    Great work xillion!

I just gave away my EJ89L to a former coworker, along with some IPR blades. the EJ has only been gone for 3 days and I miss it alreadyI will be buying another soon, but that new Edwin Jagger DE89BA11 Barley Chrome plated is real tempting.

I started wet shaving two weeks ago, with a Merkur 34C, then proceeded to buy a DE89L. Even with a Feather blade, known for its sharpness, it was too mild for me. And with the included Derby's? Forget about it. I had to make sure I didn't grab my cartridge razor by mistake. I found that I had to apply more pressure than with the HD in order to get a respectable shave.

I have to admit, though, that EJ razors are pretty. I have yet to find a single flaw in the chrome, not like the flaky Merkurs. I think, in the end, this is a good starter razor, but you'll soon grow tired of it.

There is a post listing the blade gaps on all of the popular new as well as the old razors somewhere on this site and it has the 89L having a bigger blade gap than the HD. Do you find the HD more aggressive?
