    Default Summer Drinks

I've been pretty busy and mostly absent from posting here for quite a while. Thought I'd pop in with a new thread since summer is approaching like a runaway freight train.

I thought I'd dedicate a thread to summer drinks. This can be mixed drinks, spirits, beer, wine etc. What do you reach for on a hot day? What do you mix up for your guests for a summer barbecue? What spirits do you like to sip during the hot months?

I personally love a good G&T. The classic Rum drinks are a no brainer either. A well made Witbier always hits the spot too. For wine, you can't beat a good chilled Prosecco or sparkling wine (although Prosecco is pretty much good all year).

I'd also like to share one I've been mixing up. Its based on the Papa Doble, or Hemingway Daiquiri. I hate blended drinks, not for what the represent to mixed drinks, but because its a pain to pull out the blender ever time. I started mixing this because I usually have everything on hand, and can be mixed with no prep. I've never actually measured anything, so here goes:

Fill an old fashioned glass with ice. Add ~2oz rum (I like Appleton Estate because its tasty and not very expensive, but a white rum will do too). Add a splash (~1oz) of Maraschino Liqueur(about $15 for 750mL at my liquor store). Top off with a splash of grapefruit juice and some soda water.

Like I said, this isn't a true Papa Doble, or Daiquiri. You can control the sweetness with the liqueur, or leave it out all together. Its very tasty if you are in the mood for something mixed and doesn't require cutting limes or making simple syrup. Not that those things are bad, I just don't happen to have them around all the time. I always keep some grapefruit juice around because I love mixing it with vodka.

Anyways, feel free to share your favorite summer drinks (classic or concocted), beers and wines!

Summer is when the rum, gin, and vodka come out at my house. I like the basic stuff like mojitos, margaritas, gin and tonics, etc. Beer-wise, I drink almost nothing but IPA during the warmer months.

Nothing beats a good mojito or margarita for the Summer. Sea breezes are good too.

Campari rocks w/ soda water (seltzer) and splash (or twist) of orange is also very refreshing...if you like campari.

For me, nothing beats a nice Hefeweizen like Ayinger or Weinstephaner with an orange slice

Ah, forgot about the lambics. I stay away from the friut Lambics in the US unless I can get something like Cantillon. A good Gueuze never hurts either!

Once the mint patch in the backyard comes up, it veritably demands to be muddled for mint juleps. It's been a cool spring here, but I'm still hoping to be able to harvest some for Derby Day.

Nice wheat beers (Bell's Oberon season!), and it's hard to go wrong with a whiskey sour on a 90 degree day. I've never really been strict on my whiskey sour recipes. Whiskey, sugar, lemon juice, ice, adjust until it's tart with a bit of a kick and refreshing.

Mint julep is a must. I also like a bourbon/ginger beer/bitters/lemon concoction. I've seen it called different things, I just know to mix those things together and it comes out refreshing and delicious!

for beers I like hefes and for mixed drinks a Bourbon Arnold Palmer. Although, margaritas have been known to make my summers interesting if they are made right (on the rocks w/ real lime juice/grand marnier). Then again I like pretty much every mixed drink if it's high quality ingredient-wise, and they all seem to like being in the sun with me :)

Gimlet. I make mine with a jigger of gin, a pony of Rose's lime juice, and a short shot of soda.

Also mint juleps are very nice in August. I use a Tom Collins glass from the freezer instead of the traditional silver cup.

I don't really drink, but this thread gave me a hankering for a bloody mary.

Mojitos, Hendricks & tonic with cucumber slices, margaritas, Bloody Marys . . . and the new Shiner seasonal beer, "Ruby Redbird"---it's really, really good.
