Hey everyone! Glad I found this forum as it looks to be the place to get my questions answered. I am a complete novice to the world of DE shaving and it looks a little overwhelming. What recommendations can you make with regards to razor, brushes, and shaving soap that would be good for a beginner without breaking the bank?

Also, I have seen the term 'aggressive' used to describe razors. What exactly does that mean?

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome Aboard.. The term aggressive is used for razors which are known to be unforgiving of terrible technique. Also aggressive razors are also known to have big blade gaps. I would suggest that you look up Mantic59 on youtube, he has great suggestions from equipment and other DE related items. I personally would recommed a vintage Gillette Super Speed or Gillette Tech. For a current razor production I would suggest either a Edwin Jagger DE89L, or Merkur 34C HD.

Good answers above! I'd recommend the EJ razors to start, along with a blade sampler. Of course, a brush, soap or cream, some kind of after shave treatment, and a lot of reading before you start shaving.

+1 Welcome to B&B! I'd also add the Merkur 23C / 180 Long Handle to the list of possibilities for a novice. Its a fixed blade and really gives a good shave while being very forgiving of poor technique oh and its under 30 bucks new on amazon. As with everything on B&B poke around the site do searches ask questions if you hadn't noticed most of us love to talk about our razors and products.

    Welcome to the forum!

Good razor suggestions above. Suggest you peruse the reviews section of the forum under soaps and creams. You'll get a lot of detailed and honest assessments. I would suggest you start with a cream (easier to lather). Just try whatever calls out to you for now. An inexpensive boar brush will serve you well until you get some more experience.

    Keep us posted.
    Best regards, Fran

Chinese black badger brush from www.starshaving.com for $11.95
Van Der Hagen soap from Walgreens, $1.57
vintage Gillette Tech razor, $10 from ebay, or better yet, $20 to $30 adjustable Slim.
    mug from the kitchen.

You can get a lot fancier but that's a good low budget first kit.
