Texas Moss Scuttle by Sara Bonnyman, first shave tonight!!

Folks, I'm still pretty new at wetshaving, about 3 months in, but I'm in for life. I ordered a big Texan Moss Scuttle and may I say. This is a game changer. I know that $120 Canadian is not an inconsequential amount of money. But listen please: Sara is an artist. Her service was amazing as she called me personally and thanked me for the order. She also explained that the Robbie Burns glaze is named after The Bard and her favorite sipping scotch. As a Texan, I ask you: how can you not get behind that? If nothing else, consider getting this because they won't always be available. My wife and I will be adding this scuttle to our will for male grandbaby as an heirloom and I'm not exaggerating. Granted, with just our 11 month old so far, we're easily 20-30+ years away...I hope! In the meantime, I will use the Texas Moss Scuttle every day that I can! But I digress.

Here's the scoop: boiling hot water (yes, I said boiling, for the beta test I wanted no punches pulled). I clarisoniced and showered. The water cooled a pinch while my Tweezerman starter brush soaked. The Texas Moss Scuttle has an Ayars lather bowl as part of the piece so I made my later in the scuttle. I skipped over the TOBS Jermyn St, TOBS Lavendar, Trumpers Sandalwood, and went to Nancy Boy Replenishing (cucumber). The Nancy Boy created a warm lather that I can only describe as decadent, luxurious, otherworldy. My 4 pass shave was a new level (WTG, XTG, XTG, ATG). Sara's scuttle is simply stunning in our bathroom. I feel like this Texas Moss Scuttle, this solid ceramic piece of art from the earth, I feel like it allows my hardware and software to synchronize on another level, a level not possible without it.

If I knew how to upload pictures (no, I'm not Amish), then I would share the shave porn pictures with y'all. If demand exists, I will share some later this week when my better half can guide me through it. So sorry, no lather photos (I know that's all you want, you dirty dogs!)

My routine is below. Also, once I hit 50 posts, I will probably create a review to give something back to this awesome community! I have taken so much away from this community. I would like to reciprocate in some small, humble way.

Pre Shave: Clarisonic Pro, Cerave Moisturizing Soap, Proraso Pre-Shave Cream, warm shower (optional)

Hardware: Feather Stainless Steel DE, Feather Blade, Tweezerman Brush, Texan Moss Scuttle crafted by Sara Bonnyman with boiling water that cools during shower

Primary Shaving Cream: TOBS St. Jermyn

Secondary Shaving Cream: Nancy Boy Replenishing Cream (mm, cucumber)

Primary Post Shave: GFT Alum Block, St. Jermyn Aftershave Balm, St. Jermyn Aftershave splash, St. Jermyn Moisturizing cream, Cerave sunscreen (morning shaves only)

Secondary Post Shave: Proraso Aftershave Cream, Nancy Boy Ultramarine Cream

Thanks for your replies, gentlemen, and great questions, pictures to follow in a day or two...here is straight from Sara's website. Looks like the Texan is 1.25" wider than the Large Scuttle, plus it's a ridged Ayars lather bowl, for what that's worth. I'm not sure what it's like to lather in the large size.

If you look closely, you can see the steam rising up top from the boiling water




4.5" across the top with a ridged Ayars lather bowl built in. That's the difference between Sara's Texan Scuttle and her standard large. Namely, the Texan is 1.25" wider and has the ridged lather bowl built in. This is an important distinction.



The craftsmanship on this piece is incredible. It is gorgeous, functional, and built to last.

I've had a Moss scuttle for about 6 weeks now-it is a game changer, I love it.
I have not yet tried boiling water, but I like the idea and will probably try it tomorrow.

Thanks InspiringK! Agreed, there is nothing better! In the spirit of transparency, this was a late afternoon shave so the beer in the background wasn't as rebellious as you might think But I love where you are going with that!

Tha Baron, your words are prescient! Not two hours ago I hit the purchase button on a 3-Band D01 custom Shavemac from Bernd! 22mm knot, custom black handle, oooooh, my transformation to the dark side will soon be complete! Not a big brush I suppose but I'm not a big dude.

dslazar, I'm pumped you enjoyed it! Agreed, the boiling water might become a weekend thing for me due to the extra time commitment. Also, I'm not sure about doing this with a better brush. It is one thing to douse a starter Tweezerman into boiling water, quite another to drop a 3-band Silvertip beauty from Bernd in that kind of heat. I may adjust the water down from boiling to "quite warm" for the new brush. The other threads about boiling water have been most instructive about the dangers (knot damage, lather breaking down, etc.)

I have a smaller Moss scuttle. I tried using boiling water in the past but it caused the lather to break down. Now I just use hot water from the tap.

Likewise, plus it is not convenient to go to the other end of the house to the kitchen to boil water, wait, then go back to bathroom. My wife would probably object if I set up a mirror and shaving station in the kitchen!

My better half wouldn't appreciate that either! My guess is that I'll default to hot tap water once the novelty wears off. For now, fire up the tea kettle!
