Default RFC: Ohio Valley meetup for Fall/Winter 2011

Request For Comments on Ohio River Valley/Midwest area wetshaving meetup/convetion

I have been very interested in going to a wet-shaving convention/meetup but there hasn't been one anywhere near Indiana that I could find. If there is one within a 5/6 hour drive of Indiana, would somebody please clue me in?!

I am pretty much a safety razor guy and I know little about fragrances, straights, honing, not mention large-scale event organizing. So I am looking for others in the midwest area that would like to collaborate with me on organizing a meetup/convetion. Perhaps there would only be enough interest to do a small-scale event, I don't know. That's what this thread is for. I need feedback to get a better idea on that.

I am thinking this could take place Fall/Winter 2011 somewhere in the lower midwest. There may be better places to have it that are closer to the folks that would attend. Anyway, I know lots of folks on these forums (including me) who would love to be able to see a straight being honed or to actually smell Penhaligons or to learn what Arko smells like or even just to meet some of these great B&Bers in person!

Sponsors is another area I am looking to put together, of course, to help defray costs. But initially, we could ask for donations.

Having never been to a wetshaving convention, my initial thoughts are that these would be great attractions for the event:

    • Showcase/trading area with sub-areas for straight razors, DE razor, fragrances, DE blades, soaps, etc...)
    • Seminars on honing, stropping, maintenance, restoration, vintage blades, modern blades, soap making, etc..
    • Vendor/sponsor area
    • Shaving facilities for instruction and demonstration purposes
    • Lunch / visiting area to just sit down, grab a bite to east and talk with friends.

What does everybody think about this?

Oops! I did some more digging. It looks there is already one planned for Ohio this fall! Has anybody been to this? If so, what are your thoughts on it? Was it good/bad/needed help,etc..?

Please see the following thread on TheSahveDen.com:

    http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24068

I would like to arrange a get together with the Chicago area shavers, and would like to gauge interest. I have spoken Anthony, owner of the Merz Apothecary, located in the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in downtown Chicago, and he would like to assist and sponsor this gathering. The Merz Apothecary is an old fashioned shaving store with razors, soaps, brushes, DE Razors, straight razors, bath soaps, colognes, aftershaves, and accoutrements. Merz has offered to arrange for a conference room in the Palmer House, invite vendors from brush, soap, DE razor, straight razor, aftershave, and scent companies; to have shaving demonstrations, give away samples, offer discounts on products sold at the Merz store and via their online store, and possibly arrange for a liquor company to have a taste testing. In addition, we can have a meet and greet in the amazing Palmer House bar. In order to arrange all of the vendors, Anthony said this would have to take place sometime early in October, possibly on a Thursday after work. So if you are located in the Chicago area or relatively close like parts of Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan, this is likely to be a great event and a chance to share some laughs with others who actually understand our hobby and acquisition disorders. Please get some discussion going on this so I may tweak this and make this an enjoyable event. I look forward to hearing from you, and in October, meeting you!

I'm in Lexington, KY and would be interested in attending an area meetup, provided it's within a couple hour drive.

I've come across (randomly) five or six other guys from the great Commonwealth. I would think the goal would be somewhere around 15-20 guys for one of these things?

I am in Jeffersonville, right across the river from Louisville, KY. I have asked about this on other forums as well, got no feedback. I would be open to just a casual get together to swap stories and perhaps razors or equipment. Would be nice to just meet some people that share the same interests. Shoot me a PM or a friend invite and we can see what kind of numbers we can get together.

I live near Dayton, OH, so Lexington (or Cincinnati) would be good for me.

There are a few of us that live here and communicate regularly. It could be something worth putting together.

Wasn't able to make it to the Razor Meeting. I really wanted to go, too. I hope to make it next year though.

    8th National Shaving Collectibles Meeting

Collectors of shaving memorabilia will gather on October 15-16 with people having similar interests in safety razors, straight razors, shaving mugs, stroppers and hones, razor blades, blade banks, barber bottles, and other shaving related items. See in person those rare collectibles you only read about or see in pictures. Join your fellow collectors in an atmosphere of congeniality, sharing, and stimulating discussions and presentations.

This is the only meeting of its kind and scope in the United States that caters to the collecting and preservation of all shaving memorabilia.

This is a meeting for collectors of shaving memorabilia, either new to the hobby or those who have been collecting for many years. Attendees, if they so wish, have the opportunity to display their collections, trade, or sell to each other. PLEASE NOTE: This meeting is not open to outside vendors or the general public - Collectors Only.

We are very pleased and excited about the presentations that have been scheduled for the meeting:

The Early Years of The Gillette Safety Razor Company Sebastian Sandersius from The Razor Emporium
The Gillette Safety Razor Company: A Marketing Powerhouse, Past & Present Matt Pisarcik from The Razor Emporium
The World of Straight Razors Lynn Abrams from The Straight Razor Place
So- did none of the scheduled presentations or speakers make it?

Looks like it was a great event. Never see so many razors in one place at one time I bet!!
