Time to push this back up... I had to refill on Canadian Club today (I normally drink the original neat). I saw a bottle of Wiser today. I wasn't sure so I left it there. From what I see in this thread, it's a good one. I did a bit more research and found that Wiser's small batch is even better ($7-$8 more than the regular). I located some and will surely buy some soon!

After all, I decided to get a bottle of Wiser's small batch yesterday. I have to say, I was disappointed. Very strong, in your face, no brown sugar or caramel taste. It was a let down for me. The scent reminds me of bourbon quite a bit... I will need to give that one another try later but so far, it's a negative... I will probably stick to the good old Canadian Club...

Well I think part of the problem is that the best Canadian whiskies are kept in Canada. In the United States, besides Crown, the best I have found is Forty Creek Barrel Select followed by Canadian Club 10 year old--the 6 year old and 12 year old don't do it for me. You can also find Wiser's Deluxe readily in the United States, I was not too pleased with that though. Some of the other really bottom shelf Canadians one finds in the United States (I'm talking $10 for 1.75L) are just nasty.

If you can get a Canadian to bring one for you or you have a visit there, then I can highly recommend Alberta Premium and Wiser's Legacy, both of these are outstanding, and sadly only kept north of the border. Also both are pretty reasonable in price, about $25 and $50 respectively.

Alberta Premium is on my list but isn't available in Quebec, I would need to either go to Ontario or New Brunswick to get it...

I like the regular Canadian Club, that's my cheap, go-to drink usually. The 20 yo is outstanding if you can afford it!

That's too bad Luc. I had a visitor from Toronto recently swap with me a bottle of Wiser's Legacy for Elijah Craig 18 year old which won't be available for awhile given a fire several years ago at the distillery warehouse. I also had a friend who visited Ontario bring me a bottle of Alberta Premium recently. One would think that the liquor authorities in Quebec would at least get the same stuff that the LCBO can get. Despite the prices, I've heard good things about LCBO. You should check out the Connosr web page, a lot Canadians on there, maybe you can get some swaps going. Also the canadianwhisky blog has some good info. The US state of Virginia has all state run stores with a pretty typical selection of Canadians, fortunately the Forty Creek Barrel Select which is outstanding for the $20 price. I wish they had some of the more unique expressions of Forty Creek though.

I had some Elijah Craig 12 yo before and it was really nice. Not too expensive either.

The liquor commission in Quebec (SAQ) is a real joke. Everything from France is overpriced and then, you're stuck with whatever they import as they don't allow private bottle shops. I still don't understand why I cannot pay less for a bottle a wine directly from the vineyard versus one of their branch...

Anyways, that's a whole other story. The Wiser's Legacy isn't available around here, unfortunately...

Anyone remember the late and lamented Bush Pilot? Family owned distiller that closed down 10-15 years ago. Used to be one of my favorite whiskies.

wisers and gibsons are ones i usually need to be in the right mood for, unlike alberta premium and springs or forty creek which are great at all times for me

Tried Wiser's again yesterday but on ice (which I never do usually). It was, to my surprise, much nicer. I had the caramel taste this time that I didn't last time. It's funny because it reminds me of a class that I saw on TV on how to drink Larks (Tasmanian) whiskey. They were saying that neat, it taste like X, if you add 5ml of water, you will get Y, if you had 10ml you get Z...

Forty Creek is the best Canadian Whiskey I have ever tasted.. But I can't drink the hard stuff anymore, because I always turn on Cat Steven's get drunk and CRY...

Yesterday, I posted here about Bush Pilot Canadian Whiskey. It enjoyed a cult-like following in the US, I can't speak to Canada. Small family owned distillery that closed down in 1998. Finding remaining stock of this whiskey is near impossible for a decade now. I bought my last bottle in 99.
Not 15 minutes ago, on my way home from work, I stopped at a small liquor store, privately owned, not a franchise, somewhat rough in appearance, thinking to grab a six-pack of beers. As I browsed through the aisles, I happened upon three bottles of Bush Pilot. No price and tax stickers barely clinging to the bottle. I took one to the counter, and as I approached, the clerk started smiling and said, "I bet you're the first person in 20 years to pick up one of those bottles". He scanned it for me and price came up $49.00. I asked what it would be for all three, and he gave me $5.00 off each bottle. So, as I'm typing this post, I'm sipping some of the finest single-barrel unblended Canadian Whisky I've ever tasted. These three were bottled in 1982. Its not just a good day, it's a rare day, and I had to brag some.
