    Default Shaving... your ears?

    I shave my ears.

Not every day. But every 10 days or two weeks I need to cut back those annoying dark hairs that grow on my ears.

Nowadays I use whichever DE razor has a blade loaded in it. Years ago, I used an electric razor for the job. Between the razor head and the sideburn attachment, it did a pretty good job -- definitely better than it did on my face.

The DE is adequate for this task, but it doesn't get into every area, and watch out for nicks! A nick on the ear bleeds like mad, is tricky to styptic for some reason, and takes a week or so to heal.

I'll ask for true confessions here: who else shaves their ears, and what works well for you?

I did more often when I was using cartridge razors. Using a DE for this has been less than confidence-inspiring, and now that I've started using a straight as well, I don't think I want to go there with that. One thing I used to use, and may go back to, is a Remington electric trimmer I got as a gift several years ago. The clipper head will knock down the longer hairs, and then the electric-shaver kind of head will bring it down more. (Now I just have to find it and charge it up.)

I'm not there yet, but looking at the nifty little mohawks on my dad's ears, I'm sure I'll arrive soon enough. When it happens, I think I'll look into some kind of permanent hair removal.

Watch out for the noise level on the electrics.

Some of them are pretty quiet. Others are loud enough, when right next to the ear, that I've worried about hearing loss. I've lost enough of my hearing already. I have trouble using the phone with my left ear. If I have to write something down while I'm on the phone, I use my left hand to hold the phone up to my right ear, which frees up my right hand for writing. Makes me look pretty busy, or confused, or something.

with a DE once. It worked out OK. I think I'll use a Cartridge Razor (CR) the next time. I think it's all about using the right tool for the right job.

This is weird as I was thinking only yesterday of asking if anyone else other than me does this!

I have kept my old multi blade just for this purpose, of course as there is very little cutting to do it will last forever i guess.
I hate with a vengance exposed ear and nose hair and as I get older I notice that it seems to grow faster!

the smaller blade copes well with just inside the ear where most of the hair seems to grow. I know I am going to sound even weirder but I also shave the outer edges of my ears as there seems to be errant growth there as well.
Your not alone and thanks for your honesty!
One last thing, I purchased one of those electric hygenic clippers, its ok but still does not do the same job as a razor.

I would reccomend getting a small headed multi blade, eg one of those free disposables some hotels provide, they do a much better job than the large head of a DE!

I'm still trying to figure out what the right tool for this job is!

Cartridges don't work as well as the DE, for some reason. I also tried one of those battery powered ear-and-nose-hair trimmer things. Worked okay the first couple of times, and after that the blades didn't seem to be sharp enough any more. So one of those "personal hygiene devices" might be a good solution if it's well made.

3 guesses who your favourite painter is ...

    I just use scissors.
Be there or be square. Only I can do both!

I just use a rotary trimmer once in a while, or some really sharp scissors with a fine tip on them (if I'm traveling).

I don't think that it's a good idea to remove the hair permanently, it is there for a reason. The hair acts as a trigger for the nerves so that you know that bug is there. That's one of the functions of hair on people.

Maybe my ears are mutant, but I've got very little in-the-ear hair that is problematic. It's almost all at the outer edges. A cartridge razor always did well for me there, but I can see where it wouldn't be an ideal solution for in-ear trimming.

I dunno... It gives me that much sought-after troll look.

But when I do, I use tweezers.

About once a week to 10 days, I "attack" mine with a combo of tweezers (ouch) and one of those battery powered pencil-like trimmer thingies you can get in any drugstore.

I touch my earlobes up with a cartridge razor & use a Remington trimmer to get down in there.

I use a Braun electric shaver on my ears and under my nose, every day. Works pretty well. Then, about once a month, the little "ear & nose hair" battery-powered thingy goes in to clean out the undergrowth!

I think this is a great thread. I have laughed so much to the reply's! Yes I too have the dreaded hairy ears in fact mine are so prolific, I am sure if I was to let it grow long enough I could probably plat it and tie it in knots over the top of my head. I hate it with a vengeance.

I once saw a Veterinary Surgeon attending to a dog’s ear; he needed to have a good look inside but was inhibited by the animal’s hairy ears. So he simply grabbed huge tufts of the poor creature’s growth and simply pulled it out. Strangely, the dog didn’t seem to mind at all. Not wanting to be out done by the courage of a canine I tried it on myself. Nothing to it a little pain but I am sure no more than the ladies have to go through plucking their eyebrows.

I have tried the scissors, trimmers and that Dovo device (however you pronounce it) but you can’t beat a good old tug. I do finish off with the GIII for that extra polish and around the outside of the ears.

So go on give it a go and get tugging

I actually have a good amount of white peach fuzz growth on my ears. A quick pass with a really cheap nose/ear hair trimmer does the job every few weeks or so.

Huh...I can honestly say that I've never even entertained the thought of shaving my ears.

My fiancee did ask me once to shave my nose hairs, though.

I get those little strays from time to time....I've got a little gold L-type injector I use for touch-ups like that.
