Default What exactly is a long comb?

I keep seeing descriptions for Gillette NEWs saying "long comb." Is there a short comb version, and what are the differences? What do they look like?

Wiki wasn't much help, and I tried to do a search. Any help is much obliged

How, if at all, does this change the performance?

Short combs feel like tiny little fingertips on your face and long combs feel like tiny little knuckles.

    Thank you, Mr. Razor

That's exactly what I needed to know. Now I can try to pick out the difference at auction or at an antique store.

Looks like the base plates are completely different, not just the teeth. The cap fits a bit more snug on the long comb. Hmmm....

IME, the short-comb is a better shaver, less aggressive and more helpful in maintaining proper angle. YMMV.

You are quite correct sir, Mr Pup.
    See this:

Here's another couple of pictures I took for comparison - note that cap widths are the same:

    Long Comb

    Short Comb

You'll see that the short comb baseplate extends a bit farther out, in conjunction with being curved (more like the Old Type). In contrast, the long comb baseplate is undercut (sort of like the New Improved) and supports the blade farther from the edge. Or in other words, the short braces the blade on top and bottom toward the edge, while the long braces the blade mostly by the cap.

Yes, the do shave differently and are different beasties. I personally think they're both very effective but find myself reaching for the long comb more often. An overused term perhaps, but I do think the long is a tad more aggressive. Not that a little less is at all bad.

I've just picked up a Big Boy with a short comb, which is more mild than either of my long comb NEWs. Oddly enough, after having never seen a short comb in person, I picked up a short comb, fat handle NEW the same day.

So far the Big Boy is shaving wonderfully. It has proven to be about as effortless a shave as my Long Handled Super Adjustable, which is saying something.
