Default Pick my next razor...Slant or Open Comb

Well i've got a collection of new and vintage razors now, all closed comb. EJ's, Muhle, Gillette, Krona, Merkur and am looking to buy another to feed my RAD.

i was looking at the Muhle R41 Open comb and the Merkur 37C Slant.

i shave daily as i can't stand the feel of grown on my face, but i also have sensitive skin, prone to redness if i get a bad shave.

    Which one and why?

i'm a newbie to wetshaving, but another member suggested to me that I don't need to be afraid of the slant, just respectful of it, and this has been the best advice i've been directly given to date. The Slant does for me in two passes what takes me 3 and touchups with my edwin jagger DE89. I therefore get considerably less irritation from the slant than the DE89 at this point in the game.

I voted Slant, but if you want, buy the Open Comb and I'll send you my slant to try out for a few months.

I voted for a Slant as I have sensitive skin myself and my slant was my first razor that I could reliably shave with and not have awful irritation.

I now own many Gillette New Variants and other OC razors that give similar if not better results (part of which is technique improvement) so I'm not saying a Slant is the only answer, but for me, it was the easiest.

Good luck man, hope you find something that works for you

Get the Slant, and a relatively cheap OC like the Merkur 1904 OC or 15C. Both OCs are about half the price of the Muhle and have the same head geometry. If you like the OC, you can always sell the Merkur on the BST and use the funds to get the Muhle.

The Mühle R41 would be my choice. Though it has indeed the same head as on the Merkur OC's it does have a better fit and finish as the Merkurs do. The lighter Mühle handle makes it better balanced too imo since the OC head is much lighter than the safety bar one. This all makes the shave better and more easygoing than with the Merkurs though not by much.

There is a little problem with comparing the rather mild R41 with the rather aggressive slant; the shaves are very different. So I don't really see why you would pick one or the other apart from curiosity.

Fact: the R41 would be the first razor I would buy again when all my razors would get lost.

it is just that...Curiosity. i'm just looking to add another dimension to my razor collection and routine. why wouldn't i pick one or the other?

like i said, i have plenty of new and vintage closed comb and want to add a different type of razor...hense the OC or SLANT.

i've heard plenty of good things about the Merkur Slant, but just as many as the Muhle R41.

i'm leaning towards the Muhle R41 next, then add a slant in the near future.

Thanks everyone, but feel free to add more comments or suggestions.

No reason not to and for me curiosity is one of the best reasons ever. It just wasn't clear to me why you put these two head to head. If you can spare the money you should take a chance at both. Like with some other wetshaving benchmarks these two (slant and R41) are a thing on their own and you never know till you tried them!

+1 I think that is a great idea. But I would suggest getting the HD Slant in Gold, or perhaps the Barber Pole Slant...

i'll end up with both, but not right now. wife won't allow it and i can't sneak any more razors and creams into the house...she's on to me. she looked under the vanity today and saw a WHACK of stuff that she didn't know about... there are worse things i could be hiding from her, so she just laughed and called me a loser.

as for the Muhle Ivory, it's very nice, but i like the CHROME. i have the R89 and want a companion for it, so either way (slant or OC), i'll most likely be buying the CHROME version of the OC.
