Yeah you know I'm willing to admit that a big part of this might be that I just feel more comfortable shaving my neck first. It's a problem area, and I think my concentration is fresher and better for the first moments of my past rather than the last, so that might be why I prefer it more.

Without reading through the rest of your thread, I would suggest shaving your cheeks, chin and jawline first and then re-lathering your neck before starting to shave it. The extra time that your first lather spends on your neck counts as prep time and should only help things.

Your lather is probably too dry... I'd re-watch Master Mantic...

You might also want to try this... lather up as usual, saving the neck for last, giving the lather time to soften your whiskers there... and then when you've shaved the rest of your face, wipe off your neck with a warm moist towel, and then re-lather your neck... even if your lather has been mixed too dry, which seems to be the root of the problem, and least it will be 'fresh' on your face, and at the best it's going to be right before you shave your neck...

    Good luck!

This is an interesting thread. I, too, have a problem area on my neck where the whiskers just don't cut. It doesn't matter what kind of approach I use, it's all for naught. The hair grows in every direction, if I shave with a majority of the grain, it cuts the hair a little bit but not enough, if I shave straight down, I will cut the hairs a little more but WILL get LOTS of razor bumps every single time, regardless of technique and lather used, it just happens every time. I have tried the hot towel, I have done the cold water shaves, (which popularity seems to spike every now and then concerning cold water shaves), superlather, uber super-duper liquid cartilage lather, feather blades won't even cut the hair. and I mean BBS shave everywhere except this little square inch patch on my neck. I guess that's still not too bad. I just wish for once I could get through shaving, and rub my face and feel that complete smoothness everywhere, and not have that zen-like experience interrupted by some very arrogant whiskers

If your lather is flaking off, it needs more moisture. That has happened to me before when I was careless about mixing my lather.

Does overprep cause your neck to suffer? Does your skin soften faster than your beard? If this is the case then shaving your neck early may be a real bennefit.

I find that it works better for me if i give the lather time to soak in and soften things up a bit. I did try diving straight in on the neck but it made things worse.
