    Default VDH Luxury

I just received my order of VDH Unscented Luxury soap today. At first glance the pucks are a clear glycerin soap. After I get a chance to shave with it, I will post a review.

Please do. I'm still trying to decide between the scented and unscented. I'm really leaning towards unscented due to price and I really want to melt them down and add some essential oils to create my own scent i.e. lime, lavender, etc.

I got a puck of the scented luxury soap when I received the set in the mail. I've used it three times so far. Truthfully the scent isn't very strong. It has a faint cucumber scent to it. You could easily change the scent with your favorite after shave or cologne. But as there is a $3.51 price difference between the scented and unscented, you better go with the unscented. Based on my 3 uses of the soap, it is a very good soap. Lathers easily and is very slick.

Yeah, I'll definitely get the cheaper 3 pack. I'm not sure why they made one clear and the other opaque or why there is such a price difference now. The website says the ingrediants are almost identical.

My VDH Luxary set, along with 3 additional bars of the scented soap came in yesterday.

I took it for a spin this morning.

The soap lathers like crazy, and is super slick! This is great stuff, and (based upon the first shave out) will easily give some higher end more expensive soaps a run for their money.

I am going to use it for a week or two daily, and then post a full review.

    Thumbs up

OK, I used the Unscented VDH Luxury today. Here are my impressions:

Appearance: This is a puck of clear glycerin soap.

Packaging: Do to its slightly larger size, the puck comes in a slightly larger box than the "standard" VDH soaps. The box is black with a faint basket weave pattern embossed on the sides. The front and back are "Tiffany Blue". Inside you will find a slightly larger version of the standard VDH plastic holder. The packaging is fairly nice.

Soap: Since the puck weighs 3.5 ounces as opposed to the standard 2.5 ounces it fits into my Old Spice Mug better than the Standard puck.

Performance: I soaked my boar bristle brush and mug, emptied the mug shook out the brush and started whipping up some lather. This stuff DOES lather like crazy! It lathers faster than the standard VDH glycerin that I normally use. On the face, the lather seemed to retain moisture somewhat better than the standard VDH and as I shaved I felt is was some what "slicker" too.

    Scent: None.

Conclusion: You can order the standard glycerin from Amazon for a price that averages to about $0.74 an ounce and it is widely available. Currently the unscented luxury soap sells on Amazon for $11.88 a three pack or an average of $1.31 an ounce. Is the performance worth nearly double the price of the standard glycerin soap? Not really but it does perform better and at $3.96 a puck it is still a bargain.

Does anyone know if the VDH Luxury Soaps are going to stocked in brick-and-mortar stores (e.g., RiteAid, Walmart, CVS, etc.)? I'd like to give it a try, but I'd prefer not to deal with shipping charges that would be higher that the cost of the product.

I pre-ordered from amazon and got free shipping. The free shipping on orders over $25 can be slow but I can't really complain.

Now the big question. Will it be the full MSRP or Amazons prices (complete kit)?

That's not quite what VDH told me a couple weeks ago:
The new line will be available on Amazon.com starting March 24th and is being added to Walgreens.com very soon (not sure of the exact date yet). We are planning to show the line to various retail chains over the next year and will keep you updated on our progress.

Our “value line” will not change and will still be sold in the current chains that carry it now. In fact, we are continuing to expand the number of stores that carry this line rapidly.
I've used the Luxury kit a few times now and I agree with the other posters: very nice, exceptional value (particularly now with a reduced price on Amazon). The brush is bigger and better than I expected.

The brush, for me, was the best surprise! I ordered it along with the soap because it was cheap enough to where I wouldn't be too upset if it was a lousy brush. It has a very nice heft and feels good in the hand. It's not as dense as higher end brushes, but still full. The first shave with it was a little scritchy, but then again most brushes are on the first few tries.

    (Oh ya, soap forum)
I picked up both the scented and unscented soaps. First go was with the unscented. This is the only truly unscented soap I have used. Not just unscented as in no additional scent added, (MWF for example) but unscented as in no scent what so ever to this soap. Great soap at a great price.
The scented soap will have it's first try in the morning. The scent is very mild, and some have mentioned a cucumber scent, but to me it has kind of a generic "Gillette" after shave scent, but on a very muted level. If it performs as well as the unscented, it will be a great shave for me tomorrow!

I called VDH in Texas yesterday and I was told, "We are not sure" when the luxury line will be in brick and mortar stores.
