Again, I apologise to all the people who have seen this before, but I was glued to my screen for every second of it.

I wish I understood German.

This one is interesting as well.

Perhaps we can use this thread to collect these videos into one place? There are many more, I'm sure.

I want to find one made in Sheffield so I can understand what they are saying.

Not great quality, but it is in English, and explains some of what was happening in the last couple.

Fascinating videos. I am struck by three things:

1) the complete absence of safety goggles on any of the employees

2) the use of a square head, non ball peen hammer to set the rivets, which are peened in about 6 hard wacks maximum. I haven't seen a ball peen hammer used to rivet in any of the movies about razor making I've seen in Germany or France.

3) hammering the hardened razor blanks to true them up. I've tried that with warped Ebay razors and it has failed miserably every time.

I noticed all that too, particularly the lack of any safety equipment. Maybe it is because I worked for the government for so long, and they were a bunch of crybabies, but the total absence of OH&S in those "oldschool" workshops amuses the hell out of me.

It reminds me of Homer Simpson teaching Bart to use a grinder. "If any pieces of metal start flying just turn your head..."

I hadn't seen the first one you posted but have seen the others. Very interesting.
As for no safety equip. I think the telling thing is the age of the guys doing the grinding. You don't see and youngsters. I'm sure they've done it the same way for year.... and don't think much about safety equip (right or wrong).

I like how the hollowgrinding guy just sat there in a cloud of carbon steel microparticles.

Guess what. There is video interview with last of the Sheffield razor makers. You can see it at Kelham Island Museum Sheffield.
