Default New straight shaver looking for advice

"Newbie" sounds much nicer than "NFG", but with a user name such as mine, well.... About ready; have the Steptic pencil & have already experienced its joys (not from straight shaving yet, will try Alum next time) & still need to get my strop. Questions about Barbicide & razors. Can razors be left in the solution; various scale materials, especially stabilized wood scales.Have a Barbicide container with the metal basket. Recommended method for sterilization use. "Learning the ropes" about razor reconditioning (THANK YOU Bill Ellis & Lynn Abrams) on some old chipped/cracked blades before working on some nicer blades; working on pin removal with lousy/broken scales. Oh boy, making and repining next! Will be posting MANY NFG questions & hoping that I don't embarrass myself too much! I "jumped" into this collecting & life style pretty hard; thankfully I avoided most of Bill's recommended e-Bay hazards & mistakes. Most, not all. By the way, I seem to recall something on Bills Restoration CD about his "shout box" & giving a real name "if you have any hair on your ass." At my age the hair grows EVERYWHERE except on the top! Name's Ken (with a hard "K"; its a Celtic joke). Thanks whom ever.

Welcome to B & B, Ken. I am not a straight user so I won't try to answer your question. A straight user will come along.

    Welcome to B&B.

If I will be sanding, buffing, etc., I don't do anything until I am almost done. At that time I will give it an alcohol soak.

If not much cleanup is necessary, then you could give it an alcohol or barbicide treatment.(Blade only)

Make sure you dry of the blade very well afterwards. If the scales are on, then lightly oil before putting it away(if it will not be used in the near future).
