    Interesting!

Especially that they got a bonus for every blade they discarded for quality assurance. Very cool!

I think I do the 2nd from the left. I'll have to try the far left next time.

That is interesting. $12,000,000 was big bucks in those days. One ten thousandth of an inch precision is difficult to achieve using today's modern technology.

Yes, that must have been a fortune! Maybe someone (that didn't fail math like I did...) could have a look at it an calculate how much money it would have been today... Just curious...

~185,000,000 if it were in 1940. I am awful at dating stuff though so I could be very off with the date...

    Try this site.

Perhaps that investment by Gillette caused the stock market crash in '29!

Nope, investment like that would help the economy to grow. Of course, back then there were no tax issues like we have today so the reason for R&D and investment was based on economic and not tax considerations.

Very impressive. Wonder how much P&G would spend today?

I would guess that the 12 Million is what Gillette spent on blade development and technology since its founding, not for one year. Probably includes all costs for materials, buildings, machinery, etc. Spread the cost over 36 years, and it's not so outrageous, average $333,333 per year. Also consider that there were no truth in advertising laws, so the claimed amount could be wildly inflated.

I'd like to see the "correct diagonal stroke" they wrote about.

It says in the article they spent the money over a period of 10 years. For a large business, it really makes sense though.

It's called the "Gillette Slide." Works great (for me, anyway)! I think Mantic has it in one of his videos (advanced techniques, perhaps?).

Thanks, I scanned the article real quick and missed that.
