I understand that the knot of the Duke is 1mm bigger but is it also a tighter knot? I am thinking that the Duke might have more hairs, is my thinking correct?

Mike, the Duke has a more densely packed knot compared to the Berkeley. So not only a bigger knot, but also more hairs and more backbone. This clearly explains the higher price.
P.S. For my friend Gary Young: Are my observations correct?

the Berkeley is the Duke's little brother
i have a berkeley and love it! i like the density a lot, but would like something slightly bigger. i'm thinking either a duke 2 or 3 or a commodore 2 or 3.
WTB: Restraint
The Commodore is softer with a little less back bone than the Duke. If I was only doing hard soaps I would go for the Duke. If there is a lot of cremes in the mix the Commodore is a fine brush.

They really do look similar!
But as they (Simpsons) say in their catalog, courtesy of www.emsplace.com.
The price of a SIMPSONS SHAVING BRUSH reflects the value of the badger hair used to fill the brush.............The more a customer pays for a shaving brush of the same grade - the more Badger Hair he gets!
I got my D3 in best yesterday and wow that is a great brush!!![]()
