Default dominica bay rum +/- lime vs. superior 70

    Hello all,

I like superior 70, but SWMBO does not. Thats the only bay rum that I've tried. I find it fairly spicy and thats what she doesn't like. I was wondering if that is the natural smell of bay rum, or if that is the added scent of clove/cinnamon?

I was considering trying out dominica bay rum and the dominica bay rum lime. I read somewhere that dominica was a pretty pure bay rum scent.

    1) Does the dominica bay rum smell significantly different from superior 70?
    2) Does the dominica bay rum lime smell mostly of lime, or is it still pretty spicy?

I haven't tried Dominica, but I have a bottle of Superior70. I don't think Superior70 is spicy. It is definitely not one of the "clove" bay rums. Others have said that Superior70 has a "natural" bay rum scent. Hope that helps.

That may be true. If so I may be doomed to live free of bay rum

I've not tried Superior70, but I have tried both types of Dominica bay rum. Both are very nice, with the lime being a bit less spicy. The scent does not linger for too long, but they are very refreshing after a shave.

If you're curious, you could always order a bottle and if it's not for you (or SWMBO) then I guarantee that there are any number of folks on B&B that would love to take it off your hands.

    Good luck!

Dominica Bay Rum Lime is the only Bay rum I have used so I cannot say how it compares to a pure Bay Rum. I can say that I love it. I smell spice, not the lime. However, when I get home in the evening my girlfriend says she smells lime. This is after I can't smell it at all. So maybe the lime lingers after the Bay Rum fades away. I would definitely recommend it.

I use both superior 70 and dominica with lime , the superior is sweeter and spicier the dominca is more sour and less spicy

I have tried them all and really enjoy Pinaud's Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum.

The Super 70 is nice. It is smooth and clean.

Pinaud's Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum is a bit richer and hotter and seems to have more spice. It dissipates nicely and it is an exceptionally effective aftershave.

Wow, sorry to hear about your wife and the Superior 70. The scent of Superior 70 seems to fade in about 20 minutes on me so I basically wear it as an "unscented" AS. It's a great inexpensive all around splash in the summer though. Good luck finding something else.

You may want to consider the St. John's Bay rum. I got a bay rum sampler of 9 different brands and found St. John's the best. Very clean and fresh smelling but alas doesn't last long. The grapefruit, lime , and lavender where the ones I liked the best.

+1 I have both and this is my observation as well. I'd add the the Superior is lighter-scented (at least, to me.) So I'd worry that if your wife doesn't like Superior, she might not like any Bay Rum in general (though they ARE different.)

I've tried them both and the Dominica is more interesting and complex. To me, The Superior 70 smells sort of cheap (which it is). Dominica seems more clovey.

Also, to date, the Dominica has been the best performing aftershave on my sensitive skin. Superior 70 didn't do much for me, period.

I think Superior 70 is supposed to just SMELL like Bay Rum. It's ingredients are water, alcohol and a bit of Bay Rum oil. It costs $3 or $4 at Walgreen's or other cheap stores and you get what you get.

What the original poster has to figure out is if his significant other doesn't like Bay Rum in general, or the specific formulation of Superior 70, which he says she doesn't like.

Cloves, etc., are beside the point. Maybe she just doesn't like Bay Rum.

If that very light and basic idea of Bay Rum that is in Superior 70 doesn't tickle SWMBO's fancy, it's doubtful that you can predict success for St. Lucia, St. John's, Ogallala, or God's Second Coming Bay Rum. Maybe the woman just doesn't like the smell.

Given that, and given that he HAS the original stuff, wear it again - without saying what it is - and cuddle her 20 minutes later and see what she thinks.

If you're on a tight budget and she still doesn't like it, go to some other scent. Lord knows there are enough of them.
