palmolive Shave Stick

I just used a Palmolive shave stick for the first time - wow! I have a heavy beard and had two-days growth.

After soaking the stick for a few minutes, I face lathered with a semi-broken in semogue 1305 boar, a 3rd use Personna IP and a 61 Fat boy. I had three good passes with the lather on the brush and touched up a bit with the stick after for some buffing.

I had tried to stick on Saturday thinking that it would behave like my Tabac stick (wet face, rub stick). The Palmolive is a much harder soap, so there was little lather. I did some B&B research and learned to soak the soap a bit and today perfection.

It provided a nice cushioned lather, lubricated and protected well. I like the scent, finding it to be be damp-forest smelling. Palmolive will be a permanent part of my rotation.

***OLD MAN SCENT ALERT*** The scent of Palmolive is definitely old school. If you like the scent of Williams, Tabac, Van Der Hagen, you'll like this scent. I happen to like all of these very much, so the scent of Palmolive is a plus for me.

Is there any benefit to grating this stuff into a bowl? Has anyone does this?

I had a similar experience last week when I broke out a stick of Palmolive Classic that was hiding in the back of my drawer while my recent obsession with QCS passed. With a Merkur 39C slant I had one of the best shaves of my life, no kidding. And the scent is awesome. I wish they made an AS splash and balm with the same scent. Might need to pick up some AV- seems like it'd pair well.
Definitely a top notch soap, and for the price it's a crazy good deal.

Palmolive is solid all around.
The sticks are pretty hard.
If you don't wet them enough it feels like you can rub the whiskers right off your face.
My favourite part is when you wet the brush and go to work.
You dont' see the soap and then POW! you've got lather.

Give Arko a try if you like sticks. Much better IMHO

Very good soap and the only soap in my collection that I can find locally and at 2$ each it could be worse.

Bought 2 sticks not all that long ago and grated them into a bowl. I'm not a fan of shave sticks.

An absolute, ridiculously low price. Something like £1.50 for a 50g stick. What were we saying last night about overpriced soaps?!

David, all my favourite shaving soaps are low priced or reasonably priced, with the sole exception of Martin de Candre. And I strongly believe that all those soaps, regardless of being inexpensive, are among the finest in the World.

You've been ripped off :w00t: 50p each at my local Asda and Tesco!! :tongue_sm

This is a very accurate point that we tend to overlook. An upfront cost does not necessarily equal a high cost per shave. My Martin de Candre, a benchmark for me, will go way beyond a year...

I think I"ll give a try grating a couple of sticks into a small bowl and give it a whirl.:001_smile

Although I had such an easy prep experience with the stick and lathering on my face that I may just keep going with that in the end after I've tried.

My first year of shaving was primarily VDH Deluxe, which I am a fan of. However the past few months I've been playing with a lot of new soaps, Tabac. Mamabear's and Cella in the small red bowl and like them all.

They're all great, but I'm finding that I'm doing more shaving at the gym, so am looking at portable, somewhat disposable (if I end up leaving stuff there). I've melted some VDH into an empty shave stick container and like it very much. The Palmolive stick just popped with lather instantly that I think I may be in love.

Does anyone know an online source where I can pick up a stick or two of Arko before I buy the dozen pack on Amazon>

Fantastic stick at a great price.

I grated some a while back but prefer to use it as a stick because it works so effortlessly.

Palmolive is my favorite soap overall: inexpensive, smells good, works nearly as well as anything else I've ever tried. Only Speick and AoS rival it.

I grated a stick into a small dish and use it with the Wee Scot for when I need a quick shave. A great face lathering combo. No sacrifice in quality for speed!

The Palmolive stick is, without a doubt, one of the best values in all of shavedom.

In addition to being a wonderful tallow-based soap that works as well as almost all of the high end soaps (and I mean before most of them reformulated), its cheap as chips and widely available.

As for the scent, I don't find it to be overly old manish - its a nice clean soapy smell with a bit of spice.

All in all, this is a soap that everyone should try at least once - especially if you're a shave stick fan.

I love Palmolive sticks. I can't even remember how I got my first stick of it, but I have 8 more in the den. Gonna put one into a bowl, another mixed with Pen's English Fern non-tallow, and give some to newbies.

Fantastic performer at a great price. Definitely a permanent fixture in my rotation.

Goog morning :).
Personally I use the Palmolive stick now for about 35 years and always had perfect shaves without any skin problems with it.
It is the best shaving soap which you can get for that very little money .

Greetings

Andreas

I thought they stopped using tallow in the newer formulatioin? None of the UK based websites I found list the ingredients. Are there any UK sites selling Palmolive sticks which are US friendly with regard to shipping?
