    Default The other boar brushes.

Would love to hear some impressions of the other boars that are currently available besides Omega and Semogue. In particular I am curious about Koh I Noor, Muehle, Edwin Jagger, and Vulfix. But any other currently available boar is something I'd like to hear more about.

+1, especially on the EJ and Vulfix.

The Vulfix 404 governor is excellent, and one of my favorites. I have 4 other badgers in best and silvertip which are all very good too, but I find myself reaching for the Vulfix quite often.

I'm not sure Vulfix makes boar brushes anymore. There's nothing on their website. I got a one-off boar/badger 2189 made for me but even that option is not available from them anymore. They might do special orders for retailers.

Koh I Noor makes a great brush. They are large full size brushes. I have also used the Edwin Jagger and found it to be a nice brush. Koh I Noor makes an incredible tooth brush as well.

Would you happen to have any experience with Semogue brushes to compare these boars too?

I have a Muhle Boar and an Edwin Jagger Boar. They are very good brushes. They are NOT densly packed knots, but they work and work better than more expensive brushes.

For face lathering, they really shine. Give them a couple of weeks break in though.

I bought my HJM boar a while back and thought it was too loosley packed and lacked structure if you will. I thought of it as not dense enough. I recently got to work out of town for a month and chose to take it for the duration. After about two weeks, I realised that this brush was perfect and now ordered the EJ version of it.

I view the Muhle/EJ boar to be a good brush.

Also look at the Vie Long boar brushes. Very good quality.

I am not sure Vulfix still makes boars or not but they are still easy enough to buy. I really love my 2189. I was not a big fan of Vulfix boars when I first tried them but they have become my favourites. I also have a #6, #9 and a #10 (mixed boar/badger); molded handles of a better quality than the average Omega and very ergonomic. Somewhat more and thinner boar hairs make them feel different; the backbone is 'deeper' in the brush.

HJM (Mühle) is also nice but completely different; they are trimmed (which is not a disaster btw!!) and the hairs are thick making the HJM's as rugged as the Vulfix boars are soft. They are nicely priced in Europe.

I had a Vulfix Boar, VS#5 IIRC. The hair quality was decent and softened up just fine, the handle was an awesome lathe turned beaut, but the overall quality was lacking. Within a few months it was shedding a ridiculous amount of hair and it went into the round file. I wouldn't buy one again.

I like my Shaving Factory XS (Jaguar re-brand) that came as part of a kit along with a Ming Shi DE, some Derby blades, and a stick of Arko. It had major funk when new and took several rounds of break-in and a few weeks of use to minimize it... it's still there if you take a deep which of the wet brush. That said, it bloomed more than I expected and the tips softened quite nicely. I still use it for soaps and travel, but I've moved to a Parker Deluxe Handle Pure for creams which represents most of my daily use.

The downfall of the XS is its overall diminutive size. If the larger Jaguar brushes are of similar quality, just scaled up, then I wouldn't hesitate to consider any of them. They have a nice selection of handle sizes and shapes.

That is just too bad. Haven't had the issue btw; after loosing a couple of hairs during the first few shaves they all remained fine.
