Metal Handled Brushes

I am toying with the idea of making my own brush, but do not have access to a lathe for wood. I do have access to a metalworking lathe and tools, and I am pretty confident in my skills to be able get the handle made, can you suggest a good medium to attach the brush to the handle. I was thinking JB Weld.

My grand plan is make a rounded bead-like mirror polished copper handle and put a cap and base of nickel silver. I have some ideas, but has anyone made any designs with a multiple piece handles? If so can you give me some ideas on how you have done it.

I'd just use a regular clear epoxy, rough up and clean both surfaces so the epoxy can get a good bond.

Make multible material handles all the time,some I glue some have to be dowelled.
wood/wood glues fine,two non-porous metals I would drill a series of small (1/16) holes on both mating surfaces,than use epoxythe holes will fill and form dowels.
You can turn wood no problem on a metal lathe,just fab a simple tool rest that attaches to the toolpost,easy to do.

I know you can turn wood on a metal lathe, but it is not my lathe or shop and the sawdust would ruin other stuff and the shop.

Have any of you seen any brushes made of copper?

copper would be GREAT, even more in my eyes if it slightly tarnished...

i keep eyeing up a silver one when i go to a local antique store

The only issue with copper is corrosion around the knot, I would weather or polish it as you like and give it a couple of coats of brass lacquer, at least in the hole and lip around it for the knot to prevent this. Otherwise your likely to get green chunks in the bristles and the lather they make.

I'd love a brush with a metal handle to match my stainless steel feather. I'd imagine solid steel would make for an awfully heavy brush though.

I like metal handle brushes, however just make sure to choose a material thats not super heavy. I had a Parker solid metal handle brush once, and my arm got tired using it. It was so heavy in fact, that I was confident I could incapacitate an intruder with it if the need ever arose.

I made a couple of aluminum handles from 5/8ths bar stock.
Mounted Tony's 16mm finest knots.

I made a handle out of brass that I haven't put a knot in yet. I also plan on making one out of bronze and brass. I drilled out the handle almost all the way through to lighten it up a little. One of these days I'll get a knot in it and post a picture.

Go straight bronze then patina it with Ferric Nitrate.

Good looking brushes, guys! Anyone ever do a titanium brush handle? If so, it had to be big $$$$!
