Default Casual Pants for an Old Fat Man

OK Gents I am getting to the age (56) where I can't/shouldn't wear jeans of the type that I wore in high school and college - Levi's etc. I am starting to get the old man spread if you know what I mean. I need suggestions on weekend type pants.....cargo pants, other brands of jeans, or something that have a very loose fit and are comfortable. I don't want to break the bank either - $35-$50 a pair would be great.

I picked up a couple of pair of Wrangler jeans at Walmart about a year ago that had an elastic waistband. I don't know about loose fitting, but they're pretty comfy and that flex in the waist is nice for going out to eat. I think I paid under $20 a pair. I could use another but I just can't bring myself to shop at Walmart. Hate that place.

I'm 71 with a spread! I wear Levi 505s every day. What's your problem? If the problem is a belt, use braces like I do. Get the jeans large enough in the width at the waist to fit comfortably and go to Hank's Clothing for the buttons to put on the jeans for the braces. Problem solved!

I wear Dickies work pants everyday. They break in nicely after a few washings and I can move around easier in them as compared to jeans. Jeans seem stiff and heavy. Also, Dickies work pants are only about $20 and come in many colors. I usually go for the beige khaki color. They even look good when you are wearing a shirt/tie or a sweater. Or throw a t-shirt on and go out and work in 'em. And the newer models have cell phone pockets.

I need something that is not to tight below the belt....my wife says I look like an old man I told her so - I am. Thus, my name on this forum. But I do think looser would be better.

When I wore jeans with a belt, I would get 36" waist size. Problem was typically that the jeans would slide to my hips (smaller than my waist), thus look sloppy and the belt would chafe my hip bones from being tightened up hold up my jeans. With braces, I get a size 38 and wear my jeans at my actual waist. Looks better, and certainly feels better. Should mention that I work in a garage/gas station, so jeans are more practical with the grease around than khakis would be.

I suggest Eddie Bauer wrinkle-free casual chinos; they have an adjustable waistband and are on sale for under $40.00.

For braces, consider Duluth Trading side clip suspenders. I like 'em because the don't make my pot belly so prominate.

Depending on your definition of "fat" I have found Target ( 42 / 44 waist or less ) to be a great place for inexpensive jeans as they sell Wranglers as well as Lee jeans which seem to fit a little looser and are quite comfortable.

They are also normally around 20 bucks and have casual khaki styles as well.

Try something (chinos or jeans) from LL Bean. Great prices and fantastic customer service. I love their chinos for work and the jeans fit me well too. And I speak from experience being that I'm a "big 'un" myself; 6'-4" 320 lbs!

When I get old that is what I am going to wear. I am going to buy 7 pairs and buy some slip on tennis shoes. Just slip them on over your undies and you can add a T-shirt if you want to dress it up.

61 here with a gut and no butt.. the five star comfort waist Wranglers work for me. Also, the LL Bean chinos and jeans fit and stay up nicely.

Depending on what size you are, check out Kingsizedirect dot com. I'm 6'8" 315 (42 inch waist) and have several of their side elastic cargo pants and khaki type chinos. Comfortable, reasonably priced, and pretty good customer service.

NOTE: Sometimes their hems are off if you have them do it. If your wife or someone can hem, it might be worthwhile to buy unhemmed. They tend to hem them shorter then what I asked for. I now buy unhemmed and pay a neighbor to do it.

If you don't qualify for big and tall, I'd still definately look for something in a side elastic or stretch waistband. I also like jcpenney's St Johns Bay and Arizona jean brands.

  17. Default Hernia

Just a little warning. Belts were never meant to hold pants up. They were originally used as decoration, suspenders are supposed to hold your pants up. Nowadays belts are trying to do a job they are really not designed for.

Now here is the warning: The #1 cause of Hernia in larger men is belts. Cinching them to tight, trying to keep your pants up. I

f it was me, I would not be looking at getting different pants, I would be looking at getting some suspenders. I would also be getting the button on kind. The clip on kind can come loose, and snap. Flying metal clips on an elastic Is not my idea of fun. Any tailor can add the buttons to any pair of pants you own.

    My two cents worth.
