Question New to wet shaving but loving it!

So I just started wet shaving about a month ago. A coworker got me started and I got a double edge saftey razor from an antique store and cleaned it up. It is a gillette. My coworker thinks its from the 40's. Any how Im having trouble finding a good double edge razor that I like. The best one I have found so far is a persona. With all the choices on the net, I dont know which way to go. So I am asking for some feed back? I know this will be a subject in which there will be many favorites by a lot of diffrent people. But any help would be great. Thanx

    Welcome aboard!

Just to clarify, when you say that you are having trouble "finding a good double edge razor" are you actually referring to finding a "blade" that you like? You already have a "razor" (the instrument that holds the blade). Just want to make sure we're using the same vocabulary.

if you do, in fact, mean "blade" then I would suggest ordering a blade sampler pack from either westcoastshaving.com or bullgoose.net Any suggestions you get here are just going to be names on a list and what works great for one might not work at all for you and vice versa, you need to try them for yourself. And pretty much all the suggestions you are going to get are going to be blades contained in a sampler pack from the vendors above. So, don't wait for us, order yourself a sampler pack TODAY and you could be shaving with them by Tuesday or Wednesday.

    Cheers!
    -Greg

P.S. And FWIW, my blade of choice is a Derby Extra. Works great in my 1949 (No Date Code) Gillette Super Speed.

Great advice. The Derby blade does not work for me, but works for Greglam. This is why a sampler pack to start with is the best idea.

    Welcome to B&B!

I'd agree, a blade sampler pack is the way to find the best razor and blade combination for you!

Yes, do get a blade sampler, blades are a very individual choice, and what one person hates, another may love.

    Enjoy the shaves!

Welcome to B&B!! As others have said, all sorts of places sell blade sample packs. There are so many combinations of blades/razors/beards that it's difficult to find two people who agree on a single combination. Sample pack with as many sorts as is reasonable sounds like the best idea for you.

I think you'll find as your technique and routine improves that the bases will all work a lot better. That said I started with a 34c and spent months trying different things to get better shaves. I then switched to the EJ89 and no matter how much I tried I couldn't get a good shave and my ingrowns got worse. Then I got a slant and bc I spent the months working at it and getting better at wet shaving all of the sudden I was getting the greatest shaves.

Time, practice, and finding what works well for you is the key.

    Welcome to B&B!
Being fairly new also, I had trouble finding a blade that worked for me. I personally like the Israeli Personna. As has been suggested, the sampler pack is the way to go.

    Welcome!

Sampler packs are the way to go and something I personally try to do as far as finding a blade that works for me is to use one blade for at least two shaves and use at least 2-3 blades out of the same pack before making a decision on them.

The sampler pack is a great way to go. Even if you end up throwing out 80% of the blades and only finding 2 or 3 that you like, you've weeded out a lot of the junk and you will know what is going to work best for you.

Welcome to B&B! I also concur with the advice others are giving on the blade sampler pack. Better yet, see if the coworker that you said got you started will PIF you a few if any of the blades he has.

If he is a wetshaver, then I'm sure he is generous and gentlemanly. Probably really goodlooking too.

Welcome aboard. As already stated, a sampler pack will allow you to try the gamut of blades and decide which work best for you.
