What's new

Request for new review section

Can we have a new review section, for sharpening equipment?

The reason is, there are some sharpening tools that are well understood, such as the Norton combination waterstone, but there are many others less well understood, a lot of information on them has been lost, such as the barbers hones. There are so many brand names, all of which may differ slightly in grit rating, intended means of use, speed of cutting etc, so it makes buying one quite hit & miss. I think it would really help if we had a place where we could review all sharpening tools we have tried, and so share what we have learned.

We discussed this in the Straight Razors forum, some objected that we would only eb able to state our personal opinions, and it would not be objective. This is true to an extent, but I think all the same it would be useful in the same way the other reviews are- you get a general idea about what it is, which can really help in decing whether to get it. Also for some things like the Zeepk strops, it is a piece of crap, no two ways about it, and it would be handy if there was an accessible thread where people could read this, before wasting their money on a great "bargain".

We could review hones, strops, stropping pastes, etc. And it needn't be restricted to straight razor users- anybody tried out a Lilicraps hone? They were little green glass things for DE blades. There was a similar hone made from lithide. What about the Rolls Razor? Or the Valet? These had built in sharpeners. If anyone has tried them, we could even have reviews of more wacky sharpening kit, such as magnetic blade sharpeners, or pyramid blade sharpeners. Curiosity killed the cat and all that, but it could be fun!

How about it?

Um, true, but honestly, that's the case of everything in the reviews section. There are certainly lousy one, and ones that most everybody agrees are good, but does anybody not think that a HUGE part of say a soap review is subjective. Just see the Tryphon soap review, versus all the people who are saying what a great lather it is.
