****The Wostenholm "Pipe"

The full "Pipe" logo includes the words:

GRANTED BY THE CUTLERS COMPANY - DEC. 22, 1694

which was 23 years before the first George Wolstenholme was born, and 51 years before he began in business.

Which means it was an old Sheffield trademark that one of the Wostenholms acquired at some point, but I don't know when.

For that matter, I*XL was an older mark, too, first used by W. A. Smith in 1787, and acquired by the third George Wostenholm in 1826.

The pipe depicted in the logo is a typical 17th century clay pipe of Dutch or German design, and probably has no more (or less) significance than any other old Sheffield pictorial trademark.
