    Default Newbie question

    Good morning,

so far i've shaved 3 times with my DE razor. and even though i've only gone with the grain in 1 or 2 passes, and the first time was through a weeks worth of stubble it has still been the closest shave/ least irritation of any shave i've ever had.

i hada quick question though. how do you know when it is time to change razor blades? and is there a good way to dispose of old blades?

    thanks
    -Jeffrey

Blades are cheap enough that I change after three shaves. I've found that to be my optimum time frame...

Regarding blade disposal: if you do a search for blade bank, you'll come up with a number of solutions. You can make your own by buying a cheap can of chicken broth at the grocery store, cutting a slit in the top and emptying the contents then rinsing with hot water. Instant blade bank!

We usually change DE blades when it starts to tug, or becomes difficult to shave with. Before I started using STR8's, I changed DE blades weekly, after 7 shaves.

In the back of many razor packets there is a small slot for used blades. I also received a blade bank as a freebie from BullGoose when I ordered some other items. I enjoy using this now, and it will safely hold many used blades.

When it is no longer comfortable to shave with is the short answer. When that may be varies according to individual preferences, blade and technique. Even blades in the same pack may be a bit different. I can regularly get 3 to 4 shaves out of my blades but sometimes it is only 2 and on rare occassions only 1. I quit using Feathers because they gave me 2 great shaves and then just die. When they go they go quickly. So let the blade tell you when it is time for another. With practice and experience you will know.

Get yourself a blade bank (about $1). Fill'er up with used blades and when full, cover the opening with duct tape and toss it into the garbage.

If you feel it tugging, the shave isn't as smooth as it was, or you just decide the blade has had enough, change it. They're cheap.

I find 3 shaves for my Sharks is about enough. I can go four, but I'd rather be sure the blade is working well.

General rule of thumb, for me, is to toss I after the third shave.

3 to 4 shaves and then change out the blade. I use a Altoids tin and just apply duct tape when it is full. If you small children in the house keep it out of reach or go with the broth can/blade bank so that it is a small opening.

As soon as the blade starts to pull or tug, change it. It can be in the middle of the shave.

DE blades are relatively inexpensive compared to cartridges, and therefore, I change my blade every three days. No doubt I could go for longer(I have tried and I can), but why risk a poor shave for the saving of a few pennies?
