    Default Butterscotch and reknotting

I have a couple quick questions.

First there seems to be a lot of interest in Butterscotch brushes, was this the colour they were made or is it because they are old white/cream bakelite that has turned that colour with age?

Second is that I have the brush my wife bought me when we were dating, and have ordered a silvertip knot to re knot it from Larry. I was a little worried about ruining the handle so stopped in an antique store to buy an old handle to play with first. I ended up leaving the store with 7 brushes, all have interesting handles and I thinking of just using them for display. I was however thinking that some of them need a new knot. I'm not likely to use them so not wanting to spend a lot on them I was thinking of buying some of the boar knots that you see out of China the 6 for $15.00. Is this a bad thing to do?

Yes true catalin brushes started off whitened because of an instability in the material have slowly mellowed to various butterscotch colors. I think it'd be pretty hard to find 2 exactly the same shade. That's part of the mystique for me .

There's some posts in my Wiki in my Sig that may help you with your restore (though not a lot on boar )

Welcome Daryl, you'll love it here.

The butterscotch started white then gradually turned the golden color.

There is also interest here for the other bakelite/catalin brushes especially the greens. The pic is the same brush, sanded vs unsanded. I lust for a green but have constantly been beaten to the punch. If I ever get one I would have a difficult time deciding whether to sand it or not. I love both shades of green.

Re the boar knots, though I haven't tried them, the ones from TGN (The Golden Knib) look pretty good and Tony is a treat to deal with if any problems.

I personally would not restore a knot that I was not going to use nor give away as a gift.

It's a good idea to practice on a beater to see what's involved, and we most certainly would love to watch your progress with pictures !!
