Default Checking in: New to DE Shaving

I've been tempted to switch to a DE safety razor for a while now, but finally got all components available and did my first shave Wednesday evening, second shave today. Componets used are:
    Feather blades
    Edwin Jagger 89
    Tweezerman brush
    Proraso soap

    Two points worth making:
    1. I chose Feather blades despite every single bit of information I found out about them, which was all consistent: Very close shave, very unforgiving blades, very bad choice for beginners. What can I say? I'm not a big "rampup" kind of guy :)
    2. I've not done nearly the work I should have done to research how to do this well.

So given these two issues standing in my way, so far I'm actually rather pleased. Wednesday's shave was not spectacularly close, but also resulted in no actual obvious cuts (my face burned like a #$%@# after putting some balm on it, but there was no visible blood); today's shave was closer (my neck is kind of amazing), but also resulted in two noticeable bleeds.

The next step is to actually research how to do this well; started looking into method shaving, and will read the tutorials on this site.

So right now, I'm pretty pleased. I really like the ritualistic aspect of this, and I like the results, given how poorly I started.

Welcome! It sounds like you have a good setup to get started. I would still recommend trying a blade sampler. Feathers are great, but they don't agree with everybody.

Method Shaving is an interesting way to go. Some people love it, some people hate it. I found that it didn't really work for me, but try to go in with an open mind.

    Welcome to B&B!

You certainly did jump right in! Almost a sink or swim approach, and it sounds like you are keeping your head above water for now. Bravo!

Welcome aboard. The only way to start is to jump right in. Now that you've survived the Feather, you can experiment until you find your best blade.

    Welcome!

I admire you for jumping into the deep end right from the get go. It really isn't that deep, as you have found.

Since getting my blade sampler I'm finding that what everyone on the forum says is 100% correct (what a surprise right?)... blades make a huge difference.

OK, so I think I have the technique, and needed a new blade, so just by chance grabbed a Gillette 7 O'clock. What a fantastic blade compared to the 40 year old Personnas I'd been using. I found a new favorite, I think I have 15 more blades to try, how many more "favorites"? Can a blade get better than the 7 O'Clock? I can't imagine it, but I look forward to it.

It can be done, and you can do it. Persevere.

    Good going!

Now just try to lighten up significantly on any pressure. The Feathers (as you know) are very sharp. They will exfoliate a lot of skin if you bear down and you will get a smooth-type of razor burn. That's what's stinging.

The Feathers will teach you quickly.

    Best wishes,

    Bill

Blade sampler pack will broaden your horizons and give you a better idea of which blades work for your face.
