learning to hone on a cheapie

i am ordering a cotie in the next couple of days, and i currently have one vintage straight razor. i have read several times on B&B to buy a cheap razor on the 'Bay and learn to hone on this first. sound advice, i agree. but can you set a bevel on a cheap blade? is the honing experience the same (in regards to building an edge) on a cheap blade as it is on a quality blade?

i am thinking about purchasing a selective (the kind that comes with a cheap strop on the 'Bay) or something like that. what do you consider to be a cheapie, a good practice razor? any thoughts or insights are most appreciated. thank you in advance!

You need to look for cheap in price but not in quality.

It doesn't have to be pretty, but it needs to be good steel.

The steel quality makes a huge difference. You are better off buying a vintage blade with a bit of rust and broken scales, cleaning it up and honing that. It will cost you the same, but with a bit more effort you may end up with a usable razor.
