Looking for mid to high range shampoo

My scalp has a tendency to break out with acne for some reason and I'm having a hard time finding a shampoo that will take care of it. I keep my hair fairly short, so I don't know if I need a conditioner but I'm at the point where I'm willing to spend a few bucks to get some quality stuff. I would consider American Crew products to be in the mid range level.

Sorry if that has been posted a hundred times already, I'd just like some suggestions. Thanks all.

First of all, if you can afford it, I would see a specialist about it to rule out any allergic reactions, underlaying skin problems and so on.

No matter if you see a doctor or not I would suggest changing to a very basic hypo-allergenic shampoo for a little while. I can't suggest any brand, as I live in Sweden and brands probably are not the same where you live, but any store that sells shampoos should have at least one brand of unscented, ph-balanced hypo-allergenic shampoo. The reason I suggest this, is that this kind of shampoo generally contains nothing but the most necessary stuff to cleanse your scalp gently. This means that it will be easier to track down what it is causing your scalp to break out.

You might also want to look for something with Tea Tree in it, since it generally helps with breakouts. Ask in the store.

As for spending money on a high-end shampoo...until you know why you get your acne, I would not. Chances are the high-end shampoo will contain the ingredient causing your acne too, and then that is money down the drain. And for short hair that does not have issues with dryness...I frankly don't think it is worth it.

When it comes to your question about conditioner, I say conditioner is never a bad thing. Though, for short hair not really necessary even if it is a nice treat, and at least my scalp tends to like being massaged with conditioner (or olive oil) every now and again.

Hope that helps some, at least. I'm sorry I can't be of more specific help. Good luck!

I'll often look for soaps and shampoo at T.J. Maxx. You can find several mid to high end brands at substantial discounts. The only downside is that you can't predict what will be in stock from on visit to the next.

this borders on a medical question... +1 on going to a dermatologist, but keep in mind it's their job to sell you stuff too

It's not the dermatologist's job to sell you something. The dermatologist doesn't SELL anything. The dermatologist's salary is NOT influenced IN ANY WAY by medications prescribed or recommended.

Sorry to jump all over you, but this is one of my pet peeves. (FTR, I'm not a dermatologist, but I am a physician. I've never earned a penny prescribing a medication and I've never sold a patient anything.)

Look into using tea tree oil. Its not expensive, and getting the conditioner to go with it may just be what you're looking for. :thumbup1:

my derm recomended Head & Shoulders Intensive treatment for my scalp problems.

I took another route. I shave my head on alternate days :tongue_sm

30 minutes or so before getting in the shower.. give your scalp a good soaking with original Listerine then shower and shampoo with Head & Shoulders. if this doesn't clear it up after a few days then it's time for the dermatologist.

Firstly if it is very bad see a dermatologist.

However in college I do a module about shampoo types , scalp conditions etc and the above suggestions of looking for a Tea Tree based one are right on the money!
Some high end brands would be Paul Mitchell, Tigi, Philip Kingsley.
