    Default Hello from Canada

Hi - another Canadian here - finally got fed up when I went to Shopper's yesterday and paid $11 for 10 of those blue handled face shredders. Been looking at getting a straight razor for awhile - just not sure that I'm quite commmitted enough to keeping an edge on it. Seems like alot of work. Leaning towards ordering a new DE - probably one of the Edwin Jagger models. Still not just sure. All I know is I'm not going back to the disposable things!

Appreciate any input on straight vs DE - I'm sure I'll find lots of information here in the forum.

Been a long time, but looking forward to a half decent shave again!

I used a DE for years, and recently decided to go to straights. DE's are still easier for me to use, and I currently use both. I'd suggest a DE first, then venture into a used but shave ready straight once you get the DE working well.

The choices in DE's for me are weight, type of head, type of finish. My favorite is a EJ Barley gold. I like the weight - for a good balance in the hand, I like the shape of the handle - it offers a great grip while looking good - and the head gives a very smooth shave. I also have a couple of nice open combs, and a slant on the way.

Then there is the choice of blades. A sample pack is the way to go, since the combination of razor, blade and your face is unique.

Thanks for the feedback - will likely go DE - new EJ89L, as well as resurrect my dad's old Aristocrat once I get a chance to stop by and pick it up. He's been gone for a number of years now, but I think he's be pleased to see it used again! Have to try straights at some point - will see how it goes.

By the way - I'm in Guelph - just a bit west of Toronto.

If you are even thinking about straight razor shaving you might want to pick up a starter kit from Whipped Dog. That way if you don't like it right off the bat your investment wasn't a huge one, but if you do like it you can expand from there.

I started with a DE, stuck with it for a few months, and then tried a straight-- haven't looked at my DE since.

I've avoided straights to help keep my ADs under control However, if you never advance beyond the DE world, you will still be getting much better shaves and actually enjoying the experience for a change. Good Luck !

I'm from Toronto, so fairly close by... I can send you some razor blade samples and some of the shaving cream i'm not using....

I started with EJ 86, but I much prefer vintage Gillettes now...(fatboy, slim, SS, blue tip).. you should look into it too...

    good luck!

oh, and this goes for anybody from Toronto or Canada in general... let me know if you guys need some samples and stuff...
I made 2 shaving kits for my colleagues and I may have over bought some stuff..so i dont mind giving some away...

Thanks for the generous offer - picked up some Proraso at SDM the other day, as well as one of those Omega brushes. Likely start with a sampler pack. Going to Budapest shortly - wondering what different items I might pick up there!

You should definitely try the Truefitt&Hill shaving cream/ASB samples ($10 -$1.50 B&B disc) and a Geo F Trumpers shaving cream samples (around $10)
I think T&H ASB and Trumpres soap/cream are fantastic!

let me know which razor blade samples you end up buying.. i will check to see which i have and can prob send you 1-2 of the ones you dont have..

oh yeah, I see Marco up there so I'll add this.... I'm supposed to be getting a small chunk of Cella from one of the generous members from B&B..not sure if he's sent it or not, but if you want to try some of this fine Italian shaving cream, I can send you a small chunk from mine..
I actually ended up buying a "supposedly" diff cella in a red tub, so i don't mind sharing the 'good' cella sample...
let me know if any of u guys wanna try them... i dunno how I'm gonna send them but i will try.. for Canada only... since everything's so freaking expensive here..
