Hi Pure:
Have you considered putting what razors you are looking for in the Want To Buy (WTB) section of Badger and Blade? There are plenty of members here who will sell you very good, very well cleaned and maintained razors at a price far below what most razors are selling for on E-Bay these days. They also normally put several blades in the package so you are ready to go when you receive your razor. I bought my first super speed from a very nice member of B&B for $14 and it was in almost mint condition.

I know you specified DE razors, but try a search for GEM razors. You'll find a plentiful supply of SE razors at a fraction of the cost the DE's are going for. Its hard to find a DE bargain on the bay anymore. Since I bought an SE my DE's see little use.
The bst is cheaper and easier than eBay. More chance to ask questions, more scope for people to say "this price seems too high", and much much much better pictures.
Well let me share my personal experiences both on Ebay and B&B - as a newbie here on B&B I bought a FatBoy from a veteran and with hindsight paid too much - I base this on having followed Ebay auction closings very closely for awhile now as well as the prices for FatBoys here on B&B - yes it's a subjective assessment but the difference is that it's based on more knowledge now.
I won an auction on Ebay for a FatBoy and couldn't be happier with the razor or the price paid.
I put a request for an "excellent" super adjustable out on WTB and got "terrible" - I must say though that the seller was reasonable and gave me a partial refund.
What I'm trying to say is that you can't generalize - I think there are some here on B&B that "churn" used razors all day & probably make a few bucks and there are others who are just the opposite - the same goes for Ebay .
With Ebay I stick to the "Ebay Top Rated Sellers" - someone said the pictures on Ebay are not good - you can't generalize here either - some of the auction software allows you to post really great pictures.
In my opinion the key is to get really knowledgeable about the product you're buying beforehand - and that's true of anything - the old addage "knowledge is power" !!
Good Luck !!!

Poorly listed items are either crap or excellent, and if you know what it is you are going to have a better time about it. Asking questions of the seller sometimes is productive.
Wading through very general searches is one way. You can search "razor" "shaving" and also use boolean modifiers to remove terms (-<term> i.e. "razor -cartridge")

There's no secret to searching on eBay, you just have to slog through lots of listings. Search for obvious mis-spellings (Gilette/Gillete/razer), look for listings that DON'T have the word 'razor' in them, and just keep at it.

hm thanks guys looks like there is a slight gamble to the ebay auction and i think i would rather put in the effort and money for a quality product because im already making a den to fill
You haven't really said what you are looking for ... If it is a fatboy for $2.00, you need to spend a month looking through 100,000 ebay listings a day. There is no substitute for looking at pictures.
You can find decent techs and old types for $10.00 or less fairly easily. A very servicable razor can be found quite easily with no tricks. There are over 8,000 gillette listings right now, but there is a decent old type with 7 minutes left at $5.00.
If you post in the WTB section something like "newbie looking for setup" or the like if you need razor, blades and soap, I am sure someone will offer a great deal.
Honestly, ebay is hard work for bargains. You are competing with a lot of people who are also looking for bargains. You really have to look at the picture. Once again, there is no substitute for making your own opinion on what is for sale by examination.
Good luck and have fun.
I've bought both on ebay and from BST. With a lot of work you can save a few bucks on ebay, but you pay for it with you own time buying/searching. I'd say that probably half the vintage razors that I've bought from ebay were not exactly as represented - not the same razor as the picture, a generic description, a frankenrazor (different head/handle), or some other defect like slightly bent doors on a superspeed.
I've had much better luck on BST. Everything has been as represented and I have had good communication with the sellers.
If you're in it for the hunt, ebay has way more going on and buyer interest seems to ebb and flow. I've gotten great deals on techs and watched similar razors go for triple the price at other times.
Just so you know the nuts & bolts of searching, it goes something like this.
You put in something like 'vintage Gillette' or 'vintage razor' & hit search.
Look at the categories on the left side of the page - see 'collectibles' & sub category 'Vanity, Perfume & Shaving '.
Click that & then you will be able to further refine the category to 'shaving' & then 'Safety Razors'. At that point, you can erase 'vintage razor' from the search bar & leave that area blank.
Hit 'search' again & you will be looking at all the vintage safety razors on ebay, except for those that have been mis-listed in the wrong category.
There are further subtleties & tricks to be learned, but that's enough for now...........I have to keep some secrets.
