    Default Open comb

Just tried an open comb I recently bought at an antique store (Souplex, weird name but there you go). It was the best DE shave I've had by far. At first I heard this pretty loud cutting noise and thought that I'd end up with half my skin in the sink but then realised that it was just cutting hair and nothing else. Used a Merkur blade but will try a Feather next time. I wasn't being particularly careful either. Thought I'd push the boundaries a bit and ended up with minimal damamge and almost forgot to do the after shave routine which is a good sign in my book.

That's all right, sounds like it wasn't so bad!

For me, open combs have been a strange journey. The first time i use an open comb razor its a wonderful, awesome, irritation free shave. Any shave after that turns out to be a blood bath with razor burn so hot i thought i would get blisters.

The open comb is one of the few razors I have never tried. And now, I am not sure I want to!

As the old Alka Seltzer ads said, "Try it, you'll like it." I have three razors but use my NEW open comb 90-95% of the time. I find it easier to make sure my angle is right because if I'm off, I leave comb marks in the lather.

The open comb is a very user friendly razor in my experience. Mine is a Gillette Old Type. I find id especially useful for times when I have 3 or 4 days of beard growth. That open comb will cut through all that stubble like a hot knife through butter !! It gives a very smooth , close , comfortable shave !!

Sounds like it went pretty well. Just be careful with the feather and pay more attention.

Welcome to the open comb club! Open combs come across as being pretty scary but once you jump in with that first shave it's smooth shaving from then on. Every once in a while I'll take a few shaves with a Super Speed or a Slim adjustable, but I always come back to my open comb. I haven't tried any of the modern OC razors so I can't speak to the quality of shave they offer - maybe someday when RAD kicks in again (I have a feeling that may be sooner than expected). You won't go wrong with a vintage Gillette OC.
