    Default Tough crowd

So a shaving thread came up on another computer forum, one that I happen to frequent this time, and they're hell-bent on electric contraptions. I'm trying to show them the light but it seems computer folks don't trust anything that doesn't have any circuitry involved.

I brought up wet shaving on an amateur film maker board I frequent too. Resonses I got ranged from:

    I hate shaving
I shave in the shower with no cream once a week
A forum full of people obsessed with shaving? Thats weird.

    Etc

    You cant convince everyone

Eh, here's the real truth. We like to think that a DE or straight is for everyone. That it is always the best shave, and always worth it for everyone. That electrics are just plain bad. That there is a revolution to old fashioned shaving going on. Because we all like this, and it has made a big difference for us.

But the real truth is, most people are never going to bother. I think the majority of guys actually get a shave they are perfectly happy with using either an electric or a cartridge razor, and it is fast, easy, and simple. I mean, there are basically two groups of people here, with some overlap. Those who couldn't get a decent shave any other way, and those who have a sense of nostalgia, or just enjoy the experience, whether from a collecting point of view, or just a more relaxing way of shaving. Most men are not going to fall into either camp - they already get a shave that is good enough, and they haven't the interest in devoted time or energy to it. Which is a perfectly reasonable decision, given that there are way more things in life deserving of time than we have the ability to devote time to.

I am a computer guy, have been for over 31 years. Never cared at all for an electric razor.

Most people think it is weird.... I found the flashlight forum weird.... I mean I can see a guy with 20 Badger Shaving brushes of different artisan styles and admire that collection.... 20 different flashlights spread out on a table...not so much. On the other hand...if I spent some time on the flashlight forum...found a few flashlights that really became useful to me on a daily basis... found some vintage flashlights that had interesting designs and features,.... what I think is major geeky now might become more mainstream. So when people think a bunch of people obssessive about shaving is weird.... I see where they are CURRENTLY coming from.

The problem is that Gillette has sold most people on the speed of shaving vs the quality...

I tell people that it takes me 20 mins to shave and they just shake their heads...

Some guys would be happy shaving with a butter knife...

    I like quality ...not speed...

I also like the fact that I have to pay attention to what I am doing..

I don't know about that. I always use more than one flashlight a day, and never use more than one brush a day.

How do you do that? I haven't used a flashlight in months.... What do you do with them, anyway?

I'm not so bad with the flashlights. On the forums, guys like to (and I swear I'm not making this up) take pictures of their flashlight beams.

They get a lot of use walking the dog, and I always seem to be connecting something behind the computer, or the tv, or the stereo.

Now all I need is a flashlight, a badger brush, and some duct tape, and I'll be in geek heaven.
