Default I feel like a man now...

My older cousin recently bought a shaving set (oil, cream, brush, and lotion) from AOS (Art of Shaving) and showed me how to build a lather. I thought nobody really did the old style lathering anymore, and that my usual lather from the gel in a can was good enough. Man, was I wrong.

I recently bought the sandalwood shaving set from AOS and have started using it at home. Not only do I find my shaves much more enjoyable (feeling, scent, and satisfaction of building a lather)with the brush lather, but I find I'm getting the smoothest shaves I've ever had. My face has never felt like this before! I don't think you can call yourself a man until you've shaved like this.

I stumbled on to B&B while researching brush types, and haven't been able to stop reading.

I used to 2 pass, but moved to 3 pass with my new set, and looking forward to trying the 4 pass soon.

    Equipment:
    Oil, cream, lotion: AOS Sandalwood
    Brush: AOS Pure Badger
    Razor: Mach 3 (N00B, I know)

    Welcome to B&B!

Don't go too quickly to the 4 passes shave. If you think you are ready, you can try it but I find that 3 is enough... YMMV!

    Default Welcome aboard

    JamJam,

Welcome aboard B&B. Don't be too quick to condemn that Mach 3. Proper prep and good products, like those from AOS, are at least 75% of a good shave. Good technique will allow you to get good results with any kind of razor. That advice you see given here for shaving with a DE (no pressure, go slow, etc) applies to a cartridge razor as well. Using too much pressure with a cartridge razor is one of the major reasons why people think they don't shave well.

    Good luck.
    My mileage does vary.

Welcome Jamjam! Glad to have you here!

I had the same thought myself that no one did this anymore, and I forget how I stumbled across this finally, but I had had the interest in wetshaving for a long time. I always thought how our fathers and grandfathers was better and why did it ever stop, and then one day I finally found B&B.

It's definitely not a dreaded chore anymore for me, and has become something I look forward to everyday and enjoy greatly. It has also developed into quite the hobby as I'm always looking to add to what I have!

I'm with Luc as well and would say don't try too quickly for a 4 pass, but if you're comfortable then try it. It's different for us all, and you might not need that many. As time goes on and your technique develops, you'll most likely find you can do quite fine with less passes. Just take your time, and don't go past what is comfortable for you.

Today was my first real DE shave. I agree that it does make a guy feel like a man (as opposed to a manboy).

    Welcome.

Yes the AOS Sandalwood is quite popular. It may be their most popular scent. I know it's my favorite of their line!
Ahead lie many fantastic shaves & AD's...But by appreciating #1, you justify #2!

Welcome! There is a good article on wetshaving here: http://artofmanliness.com/2008/01/04...-your-grandpa/

Reason #4 for wetshaving: You'll feel like a bad ass. I think that ties in with your feeling that wetshaving and manliness are closely related!

I just tried a 4 pass, and I think I may have let my excitement get the most of me. Although I did find it to be much better with the hairs on my jawline, which doesn't follow the grain on my face or neck (kind of sideways, like a hybrid of both), it did leave me with more of a raw feeling on my more sensitive areas (neck and lower lip). I think I'll stick with the 3 pass from now on.

    Thanks for all the tips!
