Default 3rd Day In and NO STYPTIC!

    Lads, Shavistos, Senators all -

Third day straight of this wet shaving nirvanic experience and have yet to injure myself. Passes are getting smoother and more detailed each morning, and you gotta love the early-morning little "scritch-scritch" sound as your beard comes off.

My little CVS Pharmacy shaving kit is holding up admirably - the pokey little boar's brush, while not poofy looking like a badger might be, is lathering up fantastically and the soap they include has a decent lather to it - smooth, not dense, but paints the house like a champ. Not bad for 7 bucks all-in.

I've been pawing at my mug all week like a smitten porcelain curator handling ancient Roman statuary.

Quick question, though - the buoar's brush seems to have it's bristles clump up a little bit, even after serious washings/rinsings and being completely dry the next day. No bad smells, no loss of hair, just doesn't look afrotastic like what the badgers resemble in the pics. Is this just a quality of the boar's brushes in general?

Anyway, had my great shave, off to have my great day. Cheers, gents!

I haven't used a stypic pencil since I started doing this in mid 2009. That doesn't mean I haven't sliced myself though...

In response to the question...do you have hard water? My badger brush does this and I think it's a function of hard water deposits clumping the bristles even after it's dry.

I have the same set, I paint the wet brush over a tower until dry, seems to work very well.

Congratulations on your cut free shaves. Don't worry about the brush. A new boar will do this. Once used and broken in, the tips will start to split and splay, and the feel will be totally different. I use badger and boar for variety and love them both in their own way.

My brushes clump a little if they are not well rised. If they are well rinsed then any clumping goes away with a soft brush of the hand on the dry brush. Don't towel your brush, just shake it good and hang/stand it up to dry. Boar will become softer with use. I have the VDH version of that brush and it is much softer than when I got it, and I only use it for travel. I perfer my Omega boar at home.

Oh, I only have used styptic once in 3 months, and that was because I did something stupid (not checking razor closed all the way tight)

    +1 on that topic.

As for the hard water, I flick my brush vigorously to get as much water out as possible. After that, I wipe the brush on a dry towel to capture any excess moisture.

    Congrats.

Here is something you may want to try with your brush. First, was it throughly in warm water. Then rinse it in cold water. Wring the water out and flick the brush to get rid of any more water. Then take a clean comb with wide teeth and run it through the hairs of the brush. I usually do this once when the brush is damp and later when it is dry.
