Default Help! SWMBO inherited these pieces.

Okay all you experts out there, SWMBO inherited these two pieces, they both belonged to her Great Great Aunt and have been passed down.

The watch was made by the American Watch Co. It also says Waltham under the AWC logo. The serial number is 221830. Can anyone give an approximate date and value? It is in mint condition and works perfectly.

The other piece is a bracelet, it has no markings or name on it. Can anyone help with it?

    Thanks everyone,

    Scott,
I think you are looking at a serial number on the case of the watch.

Can you look on the back of the movement under the outer and inner case.

If possible a clear photo or a scan of the movement will yield more info.

The AWWC made hundreds of models and you could pick even more cases to put them in. If you are getting the Serial # from the movement it would be a fairly early 1860. Just by the appearance I would say thats too early for it.

The serial number on the back of the watch face is 4079508. I also enclosed a decent picture of the face. Movement will be up shortly.

FYI Jim, SWMBO is still laughing her tale off at me, I just told her I asked you if your Avatar was a picture of you.

    Scott,

Using the Waltham watch database I came up with this information:
    Start: 6/1/1889 End: 10/31/1889
    First: 4079001 Last: 4081000
Model: 1873-6 Name: E Seaside Gr
    Material: U Grade: E, NL
    Size: 6 Size: 6
    Plate: 3/4 Plate: SW
    Jewelling: Plain Jewels: 7
    Balance: Ex Bal: 0
    Style: HC
    Style: NL

For all intensive purposes it looks like a nice watch. As I have read on other forums, if you are intending to run it, it is suggested that you have it serviced.

Thank You, that steers me in the right direction. I am not sure if my wife will use it or not. But I will let her know to have it serviced 1st.

Based on the serial I get late 1888-
My watch book is from 1998 so it may not be the most current resource.
I think its a nice watch.

The pictures do not do it justice. It is in mint condition. We are wondering if it really has much monetary value, does it need insured?

    Is the case solid gold?

If not, about a hundred bucks + or -. Homeowners possession clause should cover it.

Just based on appearance you can tell a mvmt like that is late 19th century. A seven jewel mvmt is bottom of the line and not worth very much. As has been said unless the case is solid gold in a smaller size like that it's probably not worth selling and the service will cost more than the watch is worth.

It's one of those things where the sentimental value is what's more important not the monetary.

As a person who just lost a very nice family heirloom Elgin to theives I'd really recomend taking very good pics of it and it's serial number (and storing them online)

Does anyone have a clue on the bracelet. It is probably from the same general time period.

I can't specifically help you but antique or vintage jewelry isn't worth much unless it can be traced to someone or something famous or it has precious stones in it. Usually they give you the value as scrap gold and little more unless there's something unique about it or you find someone willing to pay for the specific item.
