    Smile DE Newbie!

    Hello Badger and Blade!

I am finally making the move from cartridge to a Merkur 180 and couldn't be more excited. Shaving has always been a double edged sword for me, as I thought irritation going anywhere but with the grain was the name of the game. As such, I am quite sure I have never attained a smooth shave as many of you do on a daily basis. I'm just a broke college kid, but having a love for many things gone by and being in business school, a close traditional shave seems like my cup of tea. Hope to be getting my first razor, blades, and new parker black badger brush this weekend to early next week.

I'll let you guys know how the first shave goes and how much red kroovy I lose from the face

Cartridges are good take with you on a trip, especially good to take with you as cabin baggage but that's about it. DE shaving is a toldly different sensation!
I'm also a noob but that does not stop me from welcoming you ;)

It's been said more times than I can count here, USE ONLY THE WEIGHT OF THE RAZOR for pressure and you should be off to a good start. Thayer's witch hazel is like an olive in the Martini..highly recommend Lavender toner (no Alcohol ) after your last cold splash of rinse water. GNC $10.00 or on line +/- $8.00. And even though it sounds OLD SCHOOL, try some Aqua Velva Blue ICE...can burn a little at first, but, then it feels like a layer of ice on your face....scent doesn't seem to last much more than an hour, so you can use your fav cologne later, IMO. Also, make yourself some cheap pre-shave oil. 5 parts of virgin olive oil to 2 parts baby oil. I have made some with almond oil and olive oil with a few drops of lavender oil that beats any high priced pre-shave oil, I have used. If you stick with it, make no mistake, Your den will grow and grow an.....

Try to find some Bic "Metal" if you must use a disposable. Seem hard to find but I bought a bag at Walgreen's the other day to hoard for such an affair. They only have ONE blade. I usually just take a travel Gillette and blades in checked baggage when flying anyway....or just go get some Wilkinson Razor Blades at Wallymart..about 2 bucks for ten as I recall ?

    Thanks a bunch guys!

Yeah I certainly will be considering a post shave moisturizer or the like...I normally just splashed the cologne/after-shave right after toweling off and enjoyed the burn. Just from practicing my lather with my VDH boar though I can see the improvement on the skin and post shave care will be in mind. I'm assuming travel laws with DE's are extremely strict.

agreed, but as long as I don't get sucked into the fervor of buying new shaving instruments/materials (yeah right) I got a decent brush, razor, and 200 derbys coming so I should be set for a while methinks

Welcome and keep us posted. For an AS you can pick up a bottle of WH that is reasonable and does a good job. I like Thayers, myself.
