Not such a bad idea really.
Places that sell furnishings from old hotels sometimes have the ornate brass plates that used to cover the holes and they look quite nice.
    As an alternative, you could always use a bill slot used in poker tables, made in brass or stainless;

I make my own sharps container from an empty coffee can. Cheap, simple, effective.

I'd like a unique blade bank but in the meantime I am using an Altoids tin. It has a small footprint but will hold a lot of blades. It fits perfectly on my small shelf.

There's usually a cross piece (fire block) below the medicine cabinet that prevents the blades from dropping down into the plumbing.

i've been using a seasoning can. mine is from nutmeg. it's small and has a large enough hole to just plop the blade in with no modification. but, i liked the hole behind the towel rack idea. especially since we're doing a bathroom remodel now.

I thought maybe using the slots for disposing of blades was all a big misunderstanding. Perhaps the slots were put in for ventilation/cooling & drying medicines. But no, they were definitely marketed for blade disposal:

The slots in the back of medicine cabinets were definitely to dispose of razor blades. As I pointed out one other time, these were fine until that fateful day when the tipping point was reached causing the house to literally fall over. As this happened only after many years, it occurred mostly in older cities like NY or Boston. This happened with such frequency that the codes were changed prohibiting their use. As these were such big markets the cabinet makers just stopped putting them in. Really-this is exactly what happened-really....

I've been using one of those cool glass bottles with the attached pop top thing that I got from IKEA. Found the idea on one of these blade bank threads. It was like $3. But over the course of it's life, the cost/day will approach $0.00 pretty quickly. Oh the joys of math. Allowing me to justify purchases all the time!

I use a glass Mexican Coke bottle, which is somewhat risky with pressing the blade against the inside of the opening, but once the blade springs back flat it's not coming back out. Somehow I haven't sliced my hand open...yet, then I'll probably switch to a Mexican Fanta bottle.

A monkey in the shape of a cat? Are you sure its not just... a cat?

Anyways, I live in an old house on an old Air Force base. Just checked and both my bathrooms have those slots. I wonder how many rusty old razors lie behind! It looks like only four screws holds the cabinets in place, I might take a look if I get bored enough.

You can also buy a blade bank from westcoastshaving.com for dirt cheap shipped. That's what I did and am more than happy with the product. Cost me $3.00 shipped and I'm in Canada. Hope this helps!

You should have a video crew on hand if you decide to open one of these up. A pump shotgun would be a good idea as well.

I could take pictures. I don't have a shotgun, but I would be holding a screwdriver...

I've been mulling it over and there are three possible outcomes.

A: There is nothing behind the cabinet and I waste my time.

B: A bunch of old razors spill all over my bathroom, making a mess and possibly killing a pet or two.

    C: Treasure!

I sell my used blades online to Elvis fans. I just say they are rumored to have found in a certain bathroom wall in Memphis. Couple more years of shaving and then I can retire.

    I love this idea!

Can it be a Sophia Loren AND Tux the Penguin?
