Default Why do I rarely see a straight razor on B&B sales forum?

I see a lot of safety razors for sale on this sight. Why is it there rarely is a straight for sale? Does this suggest something I am missing? Anyway, I bought my first from Vintage Razors and cannot wait to get it. I bought a Norton 4000/8000 and a strop (a Dovo). I have an old straight that was my Dad's. It's name is E. Hammesfahr & Sohn, Solingen. Anyone ever heard of it? It's a bit beat up but salvageable. I certainly will give it a try. I would love to shave with it after watching my Dad do so many, many years ago.

Straight shavers develop a relationship with their blades, the likes of which you'll learn to appreciate soon.

I'll second what Alan said. The time you spend honing and stropping a razor tends to lead to a real bond between the two of you. I think the enduring nature of straights is a factor as well, I've got vintage razors that are nearly 200 years old and shave beautifully, and will continue to do so as long as I do my part.

I'd also like to mention that I'm in Houston as well so feel free to give me a yelp if you need assistance.

Plus, I think people know their audience. Most of the straight razor guys on here also post over at straightrazorplace.com - probably a bigger audience for a sales post over there.

In general this forum is more orientated towards DE's. SRP will provide more straights for sale and certainly Eboy has around 900 at any given time.

I must have over thirty straights now and find it hard to sell any of them. You can put a lot of time into them getting them restored and then honed up. When you get a great shave with it, you don't want to sell it any time soon. That's just me of course.
I did recently buy 10 razors that I said I would sell so I might let a few go. I have sold some in the past to pay for new ones. The post with the 4/8 Dovo is a nice deal. Don't let the small size fool you. I get a good shave from every good razor, regardless of there size. The ones that don't won't be showing up here FS.

I just got a 4/8 tortoise vintage razor from Vintage Razors so I want to avoid this size for now and try some others.

Some of these babies are absolutely beautiful. I can see how you want to keep them and never let them go.

    Hi Dennis,

Welcome to the world of the straight edge. I shave exclusively with straights and keep 8 in my regular rotation at all times. Some never rotate out, others sit in the drawer for some R & R to return a few months later. While I belong to SRP as well as B & B, I find that I spend 90+% of my time on this forum. Many of us claim dual citizenship between both places because they each have a tremendous amount of topical knowledge on subjects we want to learn about.

Both sites have great founders that are very approachable and willing to help you if you need it. I just tend to hang out here because a wider variety of subjects tend to come up that interest me. If you are looking to see some of the straights that are offered on this site, I would suggest posting a thread in the straight forum here asking for some suggestions on what to buy. I have no doubt that multiple members here that are into restoration, selling NOS product or brandie new will respond.

I will be happy to provide you with some links or names of members that I know sell outstanding stuff and stand behind it. B & B is truly a community and they will be happy to help you out. PM me if I can assist.

    Scott,

Many thanks. I certainly can sense what you have stated as the people on the site are quite welcoming and just downright friendly. I intend, like you, to hang around.

Well, I guess you see so many DEs being sold on the sales forum because so many members are moving on to straight razors.

If I were selling one of my straight razors, I would want to go where I would find the broadest audience. While B&B has a great Straight Razor community, SRP certainly offers a much larger audience. And I would never consider selling a DE at SRP.

I get the whole relationship with the blades thing, it's very intimate. But those blades that you never seem to get such a good shave from, or just don't enjoy using, you can sell them. I had a little 4/8 like that. A friend stayed at mine who uses a straight, so I lent it him, and he got a perfect shave with it! I gave it to him.

I don't feel right selling something that won't give a good shave, so I usually give them away. I used to give away razors that I "just didn't enjoy using" (aka 5/8ths full hollows) as well, but then one day I discovered that I preferred them and had to go on a buying spree on the bay. Now I just hoard any razor that shaves well, figuring that my preferences will eventually change and I'll get back to them.
