I don't know that I'd go that far, but I become sad when I see dust inflicted upon good people at twice the cost per ounce of a reasonably decent loose leaf tea.

I have contemplated going that route, but I am only a very occasional tea drinker.

Shoot me a PM or post in the cafe if your interested in loose leaf that is affordable and keeps along with good cheap gear, I've derailed this thread long enough.

I have been slacking off in my POTD postings. In my extra free time I have been having 2-3 pipes a day, but many of them are less interesting OTC or bulk blends in a cob or what-not. Night before last I had some Esoterica Tobacciana Margate in my Spaniola's Pipes Freehand Plateau. I'll give it a couple more smokes, but I initially wasn't a huge fan of this one so I may trade it off. It is a great smoking blend; I am just finding I'm not big on a lot of the orientals.

Now keep in mind that I started with a pre-drilled block. PIMO sells the spade bits for the bowl for $15.50 to $17.50, the mortise bit is about $37, and $6 for the 5" long 11/64" for the air hole (not a bad price if you've priced "aircraft" drill bits)
That will be enough to bore a virgin block.
The mortise bit has a surfacing attachment that puts a square face on the shank so it's ready for the stem.
I don't, but woodworking is something I always wanted to do. The local community college offers classes- I may have to take some.

I don't think it is about being a high falutin' pipe smoker, but what brings you relaxation. Hell, I am still smoking a cob, and will buy more even after I order my briar.

Oh, I meant nothing negative by my statement. I enjoy my MM cobs as much & sometimes more often than my briar pipes. And some of the OTC blends are great for when you want a mild flavor & to not have to worry about bite. It's just that I like to include pics in my POTD posts & often some comment on my impressions of the blend. With my schedule being so open I find stuff kinda runs together. So when I sat down to post here & I couldn't remember every smoke.

I really ought to start a "pipe diary" so I can just make a quick note about each smoke even if I don't have a chance to post. I think that would also help with deciding on new blends to try.

A minute ago I just finished up a big bowl of C&D Pirate Kake in my Spaniola's Pipes Freehand Plateau. This is still one of my favorites, yet tonight I didn't enjoy the flavor as much as previous smokes for some reason. Maybe the Thai food I had earlier was skewing my palate.

While I was setting here I decided to go ahead & have a little PA in a MM Missouri Pride. It's a virgin bowl, but an older stem. I'm currently trying to see if I can freshen up the original bowl with some salt/alcohol treatment.

Had two yesterday. After the smoke in the Tinsky I borrowed a friend's pipe (that I bought him, and he never uses) and had my first go at Half & Half. Not too bad I guess, it numbs the mouth out like clove cigarettes do. Anyone know what causes that?

G&H Irish Black Twist in a Aristocob, the smell reminds me of damp yard clippings and insects burning but I like it for some strange reason

Just enjoyed a Peterson author/apple filled with Rattray's Hal O'the Wynd out in the yard with my psychology textbook.

Here's a newbie question I'm sure you cats can troubleshoot properly: Am I supposed to have a lot of unscorched tobacco left after smoking down a full pipe? Seems like there's plenty that sticks to the walls and bottom of the bowl that just never gets fire. Is that the cake I hear so much about or what? Please illuminate this student.

Nope. What you need is a good tamp down & a re-light. When you're done there should be nothing but ash in the bowl (although there may be a tiny bit of tobacco not completely smoked on the very bottom of the bowl if the air hole is not drilled at the bottom - the term for this, I believe, is "dottle").

Cake is a layer of carbonized sugars that builds up in the bowl over time.

Today was some bulk from my B&M called Celtic in a brand new MM Corncob that I picked up for $5.99. It's okay stuff, pretty similar to Capt Black IMO. Gotta love that first smoke in a new corncob, though.
