Default NYC shavers-- looking for a place to take photos for our engagement shoot

the FI and I were hoping to take some photos at the New York Shaving Company because they have a great old barbershop style set up. We're doing our engagement photoshoot and just wanted a couple of pics in the chair. We have a professional photographer for an hour and picked the area (SoHo) because its our normal stomping grounds. New York Shaving Company wants to charge us $50, wants us to reschedule our photographer to before their store hours open and will give us a "complimentary" gift card towards a shave later (a $30 value). So we're going to have to say no thanks. I'm disappointed that they can't be more accommodating but I understand they have a business to run. I am annoyed that they want to charge us $50 for sitting in the chair for a couple of minutes. . . and before their business actually opens. I would think a professional photoshoot would be mutually beneficial. . . at any rate they've lost two customers.

Do you guys have any suggestions where we could get that same barbershop feel in the area? Nolita, Soho, etc.

Not sure about that area if there's any other spots. his place is pretty neat also and they do have a barber chair for shaving in there as well. http://www.cigarinn.com/catalog/02_about.htm

Not quite the same area, but you might want to give the village a whirl.
Take a look at the recent NYT article:

BTW, very cool idea for a photoshoot, and congratulations.

Peter Luger's told me the same thing when I asked if I could bring a steak and use their broiler.

You can always head out to Gentleman's Best in CT.

Thanks but that one is too far uptown. We only have an hour.

Thanks! there's a lot of leads in the article. Greenwich village might not be so bad if we cab it. I really wish we could get the groomsmen DEs and brushes but I don't think they'll be too interested!

Who did you speak to at the place?

When I was there I got a great vibe from one guy while a less than accommodating vibe from the other guy who was there.

Perhaps you could call and ask for guy #1.

You can PM if you want if you know the name so we can figure out who you spoke with.

The might have a business to run, but that is the perfect reason for them to let you have a few minutes in the chair. It would have cost the nothing in real terms and the value in goodwill would have been priceless for a shop like that.

I've taken a shave there and the place was not exactly packed, to say the least. On top of that I don't believe the barber that gives shaves is even there everyday. At least that is what I was told I made my appointment. I doubt you would have been keeping anyone out of that chair.

Good luck with the search for a photo spot and your upcoming nuptials.

Man, I'm glad I wasn't drinking my coffee when I read this.

we emailed the owner, John Scala, after my FI talked to his wife. We've spoken to him before and he's a nice guy. It's not like I think they're big meanies, just unaccomodating. We've stopped by a couple of times to ogle shaving gear and we've never seen anyone in the chair getting a shave. I think we'll have to let go of this idea for now. Thanks for all the leads though. For those of you who are interested in New Yorky nostalgia, we've decided to take pictures at Housing Works . It's a bookstore owned by a great npo dedicated to ending homelessness and AIDS and it's one of our favorite places in the area.

Jim that photo on the Brooklyn Promenade is very nice. It's a gorgeous spot and I might take some portraits there like you've done.
