Personal Preference:

) I would ask for AoS or C&S, or perhaps that snooty French one.

Agreed. End of story.

The Italian soaps are in favor lately and with good reason. Make it easy for here and make an Amazon wish list, for $30, with free shipping she can buy you:

Valobra Stick
Valobra Soft
Cella Tub

All are very worthy choices, and you'll understand what every one is talking about.

This is so interesting. After reading thread after thread of folks choosing the Fat over Tabac, many who have responded so far have liked Tabac the best.

Count me amongst the ranks. Tabac gives me the most protective shave by far. Arko is right up there, not too far behind.

After that I'd say Valroba stick and then Cella.

I've just started my journey with MWF so it's too early to say. Though the first two tries were a little thin and dried a little quickly, I did get a great low irritation shave both times.

Other soaps smell better, other soaps lather easier, but as far as giving me close, smooth, consistently irritation free shaves the best performers for me have been:

Tabac. I don't really like the ashtray scent, but there's no disputing the performance.

Arko. Right after I get done shaving with Arko, I wonder why I use other soaps.

Honorable mention to the Godrej round and Proraso white tub.

MWF end of story. It may not lather quite as easy as some, but it more than makes up for it with the best skin conditioning/moisturizing. Honroable mention goes to AOS, Cade, and SliceOfLifes homemade soap.

In these types of threads, I think it's helpful for people to know how many soaps and what types of soaps a poster has tried, and then their choices (for obvious reasons). The following is a list of every shaving soap I've ever tried:

Mama Bear Spicey Lime
Mama Bear Frankincense and Myrrhh
The Gentleman's Quarter Savon de Campagne
" " " Provence Lavender
" " " Toasted Almond
" " " Blackberry Sage
VDH Deluxe
VDH Select
modern Williams
Saint Charles Shave
Provence Sante Green Tea

Right now I'd rank them as follows:

1. SCS
2. The Gentleman's Quarter
3. Mama Bear
4. VDH Deluxe
5. Provence Sante Green Tea
6. VDH Select
7. modern Williams

SCS soap gives me the creamiest lather. Lathers from TGQ and MB are slightly slicker. TGQ and MB soap lathers are approximately equivalent; I get great lathers from both. I rate TGQ slightly higher because of the scents.

Yes, I ranked VDH Deluxe over PSGT. I get a creamier and more stable lather from the VDH. VDH Select, on the other hand, is not a good performer for me. Modern Williams is a pretty good (but not a great) bath soap.

Good Point, I'll rephrase my earlier response. These are the soaps I've tried:

Tabac
Palmolive
DrH Arlington, Lavender, Marlborough
Provence Sante original and green tea
Mama Bears
Queen Charlotte Soaps
Madame Scidoli Soaps
Institute Karite
Cade
Monsavon
Martin de Candre
Pre de Provence
GFT Rose and Sandalwood (non-tallow)
Cella
P160
Valobra Stick
Gold Dachs
Irish Moos
Klar Kabinett
Vintage Williams and Modern
SliceOfLifes Soaps
MWF
Speick
Arko
Eramasic Stick
Proraso
Fitjar
Wrisley
Yardley
Tabula Rasa (consider it more of a soap)
VDH Deluxe
Edwin Jagger Sea Buckhorn
AOS Sandalwood, Lavender
Probably more I can't think of at the moment

Of these my preference is for:

Tabula Rasa (consider it more of a soap)
La Toja
AOS Sandalwood, Lavender
MWF
Cella
P160
Valobra Stick
Martin de Candre
Queen Charlotte Soaps
Institute Karite

If I could pick only 5 it would be:
MWF
AOS Sandalwood
Cella
MdC
Valobra Stick

I could have a rotation of just these soaps and be perfectly content for a long time.

I've used:

Prairie Creations (tallow formula, no lanolin)
Saint Charles Shave (multiple scents)
AOS Lemon
Cade
Charismata Cherry Pipe Tobacco
Palomolive Euro Stick
Madame Scodioli Dust Shaker
Island Soaps

I'd rank them:

AOS Lemon
Palmolive Euro Stick
Cade
SCS
Prairie Creations
Madame Scodioli
Charismata
Island Soaps

AOS and Palmolive are top of the heap for me. I get about the same performance from Cade and SCS, but those soaps need a little more work to get to the same end, although I've got my lathering method down to a science now with them and I think they're awesome. Prairie Creations makes great soap as well, but more of a top-of-the-heap 2nd-tier soap for me. Scodioli soaps perform pretty well, but a quick search will show you why this soap is ranked so low on my list. Charismata gave me a lot of trouble before I got it to where it's usable for me, but not one of my favorites. Island Soaps Shaving Soap was totally useless in my hands, at least. I finished it in the shower.

Just my $.02, hope this helps.

I'm unsure how to answer this question not knowing whether to include soft soaps/hard creams.

Irisch Moos Shave Stick
MWF
Provence Sante

Soft Soaps
Acqua Di Parma
SMN
Monsavon

My favorites:
1) Acqua Di Parma:
2) Valobra Shave Stick.
