Gail at Schott can usually get you into the right size.

I wear a 46 XL sport coat and my 46 740L fits me perfectly.

With the Leather ones my favorite is the 650. Wool lined. Heavy. Nice metal buttons. Too bad I'm too tall for a good fit.

The 740N label was used on a variety of Peacoats, some leather, some wool. The 740 is the standard US made.

Another to look at is the 740C which is a more elegant version US made with leather trim. 740CE is a lighter weight version made in Canada. Both have red satin lining.

    Happy Hunting!

Just picked up a nice peacoat from an Army/Navy surplus in South Louisiana. $85, sleeves are Long enough (rare for someone who is 6'2"), and it seems warm. I'm happy with it.

It was Dixie Surplus, 1920 Cameron St Lafayette, LA 70506. There were a ton of peacoats left in all sizes.

Buzz Rickson's makes what is probably an amazing reproduction pre-WWII pea coat. 36 oz wool from vintage looms, the corduroy lining on the pockets, etc. All reproduced with the fanatical attention to detail that the Japanese can bring to bear when they really, really care about something. Check it out here: http://historypreservation.com/hpass...hp?uniqnum=292

I'd love to have one, but I sadly don't have a spare $800 lying around.

Back in my high school days I was given a pea coat by an old retired navy guy who played in the same Eagles lodge concert band as my dad and I. It was old, quite heavy an in really nice shape. He said the navy made him buy it before they would muster him out after Korea. It seems there was a rule that everyone was required to have one in good condition upon discharge. I guess the navy expected that a bunch of their discharged sailors would be sleeping under bridges, LOL. I wore that thing a lot back then. I wish I could still fit into it.

Did you notice any 46 and 48. It would probably be worth the six hour drive to be able to try them on.

I just received a 740L (long size in traditional Pea Coat) from Schott in a size 36. It's a great coat but the sleeves are still about 1-1.5" too short. I'm definitely an atypical American body shape... Anyway, Gail from Schott has been very helpful in trying to get this sorted out without doing a custom order.

The current idea is to use some additional wool fabric from Schott and possibly some leather as trim to extend the sleeves the necessary amount. Does anyone have experience in doing something like this, or have any suggestions on how to do it? Obviously I'll be taking it to a tailor, but I'd like to go in with some ideas in hand. Perhaps a cuff of some sort, I don't want to stray too drastically from a traditional Pea Coat. I've been looking online at some pictures, but I seem to be striking out!

Wow you have some long arms my friend.
I think what you might do is make an wool extension that sews inside the existing cuff. Sort of like shoving a 3/4" pvc pipe into a 1" pvc pipe. I think that would look the least added on. The question is does the sleeve opening then get too small for you. Good luck, give my best to Gail.

    Gail is great, isn't she?!

I like the idea, I think the opening would still be plenty big, it's not a super slim fitting coat. I was also thinking about doing a pseudo-military cuff (not sure what to call it, here's a picture from another Schott Coat) in order to disguise any external seams should I have to go that route. I'm not sure if it's too non-traditional for a pea coat.

My arms are proportionate to my height, I'm just thin. It's not all it's cracked up to be, I can never find clothes that fit well because I prefer a slim cut. Basically, to fit my torso, everything is too short. I'm 6'2" and 160 lbs, so tall and thin... It's really a curse

I'm 6'5" so I understand. Although I do have 105 extra pounds on you, so their 46L fits me perfectly.

that button tab idea would work well I think, maybe even look better.

After reading this, I popped into Marshalls during my lunch break to see what I could find. I, too, now love that store. I walked out with a Kenneth Cole Reaction Pea coat (dark charcoal, 6 button) and brown suede, zip up jacket for the grand sum of $59.00...for both!

Edit: The brand of the brown suede jacket is Weatherproof Apparel. Apparently they've been around since 1948. I'd never heard of them until I picked up the jacket, which drew me in on it's good looks and even better price.

Now that is some good shopping right there folks.

I recently revisited the Sterlingwear website where I purchased my Navigator pea coat. I like the coat very much. I am very pleased with it. But I think I noticed a dramatic increase in the cost of that coat from last year. If I recall it was less expensive than the jacket from Schott. Now it is just about $30 more than the jacket from Schott. I gotta find my receipt to make sure I'm not mistaken. Can anyone confirm this? Just curious because that would be a sharp increase over the course of one-year.
    Cheers,

    Bob

Good score! I tried that Weatherproof jacket on too. It looked sharp but too small in the shoulders. If it fit I would of bought it too...

My uncle gave me his Pea Coat, he was in the Coast guard probably in the early 70's. The coat is very heavy, thick wool and happens to fit just right. I don't wear it a lot because its too warm for most circumstances, but I have worn it with everything from jeans to khaki's to dress pants and I think it works no matter what!

Came across this thread last month, and even though spring is here on the west coast, I decided to check out my local Burlington coat factory to see what was there. It took some searching but I located a couple of the Schott 740 pea coats for $139.00, a significant discount from the manufacturers price. I wear a 44L in a dress jacket, and found a size 46 in the Schott. It was a really nice coat, but something was telling me to hold off on it. The 46 fit me but it was really close to being too snug. Plus the wool seemed coarse to me and stiffer than what I expected, and remembered of my Grandfather's Pea coat. By the time I was old enough to wear it it didn't fit me so a cousin ended up with it. it took a lot of restraint, but I didn't pull the trigger on the purchase. I monitored some EBay auctions and ended up winning a fantastic size 48 Pea coat, made by Sterling Wear of Boston, the Navy's current contractor. It even has the rating patch still on it, and I have to say that the Sterling wear coat is of much better quality than the Schott. The wool on the Sterling Wear coat is much softer, and all the seams are taped with black nylon, even the liner is smoother and more comfortable than the Schott jacket. All in all my vote goes to the Sterling Wear coat as being the better of the two. I also paid far less than the Burlington price, and the new price of the Sterling Wear coat. Looking forward to winter again so I can break this beauty out of the closet.

While not a pea coat per se; this is my go to. http://www.koyono.com/BlackCoat-Clas...oat-p/mbcc.htm It works with jeans, khakis, and suits. It has a zip in liner, is waterproof and has many pockets. It can hold an IPAD in one of them unseen. Currently on sale (almost half price)...best coat I ever had. Don't need a carry-on with this jacket.
