My son just bought a Navy issue p-coat at a local military surplus store. I think he said it cost him $150.

Fascinating thread - pea coats are quite rare here in the UK: a very similar style, slightly longer, is usually referred to here as a 'reefer'. Again not so common these days.

I have a Schott leather pea coat which I picked up 2nd hand from a sales thread in a watch collecting forum (no, I didn't rate it as a good place to sell one either...). The coat gets positive comments, which is nice, but the real benefit is comfort in almost any temperature short of about 20 deg Celsius (72F?).

Leather coats are a bit problematic once you get north of 40, (so my daughter tells me) anything too 'biker' / 'aviator' can look a bit daft unless you're astride a large bike or actually flying a plane. She sort of approves of the pea coat which is as good as you'll get out of a teenager.

With the cooler weather just around the corner, not a bad time to bump the pea coat thread again. I can't wait to start wearing mine again.

I still have my boot-camp issued Navy pea coat from 15 years ago, and it still fits me fine. Ready for the Chicago winter.

Looking at those prices it would be cheaper to get one at an Army/Navy store.

Well, time is wasting. You better get another so you can break it in.

I have a Schott Leather Pc and it is a very nice coat, I wear it with jeans and on the odd occaision I have worn it with a (suit RARE for me) looked fine, but then I would wear a donkey jacket with a suit, because I'm totally classless.

I'm in the market for a new coat, and like the look of the Schott 740, as well as the Sterlingware that Bob posted earlier in this thread. According to the Sterlingware website, there is an Army / Navy surplus nearby that stocks its products. Unfortunately, I would have to drive a couple of hours to find a Schott retailer.

I live in Indiana, so the winters can be fairly unpredictable. Would either coat be sufficiently warm to get me through the winter? I like the look of the quilted lining in the Schott for this reason.

Also, Jim, I noticed that you previously had a Schott. Was the sizing consistent with your suit jacket size? In order to save some driving, I may just order one off the website and hope for the best.

To be honest its been quite a while, I recall the Schott's ran large. I will say the Schott is head and shoulders above the Sterling wear Classic which I replaced it with just this last week, I am sending it back.

    Jim,

Thanks for the reply. I found that Schott has a message board on its website for product related questions. Several people have posted sizing questions and have been told to call customer service with their measurements for sizing assistance. I think I may go that route and see what they have to say.

I did a bit of research online, and haven't found many negative comments about Schott products. I've seen a few complaints about the initial stiffnes of the peacoats, but I think I would look forward to breaking it in!

I bought my Schott U.S. 740N 32 ounce Melton Peacoat at the end of last winter from Burlington Coat Factory. It was on clearance for $120.00. Have had it zipped up in a travel suit bag and stored away in the back of a storage closet all year. After reading all the great reviews of it in this thread, I can't wait for it to get cold so I can wear it for the first time. It looks like one could wear it casual or formal. It is a very well constructed peacoat with thick and heavily stitched seams and quilted lining. I start getting hot just trying it on for a few minutes. It screams quality.

I had originally ordered a Schott 740 after speaking with their customer service about sizing and when I received it, it was much too big and I returned it. The Sterlingwear coats are also offered in various lengths which better suited my needs.

Sorry to hear that Jim didn't like the Sterlingwear coat.
    Cheers,

    Bob

After seeing on a couple of other forums that people had found Schott coats at Burlington Coat Factory, I stopped by my local store this afternoon in hopes of finding one. The good news is that I found several, the bad news is that they're all regular sized and I need a long.

The coats I found were Schott 740N peacoats, and were in the size 36, 38, 42, 44 and 46. They had the original Schott tags, and were on Schott hangers. I did not see anything that would make me think they were irregular in any way. The Burlington Coat Factory price was $139.99. They had the coats in the original navy as well as black.

If anyone is interested in one of these, please PM me and I would be more than happy to pick one up and ship it to you as long as you reimburse me for the shipping charges. If you're a little skiddish about it since they're from someone other than an authorized retailer, I could stop by the store and snap a couple of pictures if you want. There are a couple other stores where I live, so I may go check them out tomorrow on the off chance they have a long.

Edit: After searching Burlington's website, I found a post in the forum where Gail states that Schott sells closeouts to Burlington. For anyone interested, here is the link:

Bob Your navigator is a much more finished product than the Classic, I picked the classic as they said it was the warmest.

Yeah buddy! Pea Coat time! ...Almost!

Mine is a Kenneth Cole Reaction pea coat that I think I got at Burlington Coat Factory. I like it a ton, and I think it was only around 70 or so USD. Usually I wear a lighter sweater under it with a scarf. Keeps me nice and warm. Now I just need to find a pair of badass leather driving gloves that are also warm...
